the riverbank following the controlled landing. Jordao, Brazil: A Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six carrying 7 occupants made an emergency landing in a river in Brazil’s remote Acre state after suffering an apparent engine failure shortly after departure, according to regional aviation reports. The incident occurred on May 7, 2026, near Jordão Airport in Acre, a remote region in western Brazil surrounded by dense Amazon rainforest and limited emergency infrastructure. Preliminary information indicates the single-engine aircraft experienced power loss shortly after takeoff, forcing the pilot to attempt an emergency return before conducting a controlled landing on a river. The aircraft involved was a Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six. The pilot reportedly attempted to return to Jordão Airport after the engine malfunction but was unable to maintain normal flight operations, leading to the emergency water landing. All seven people onboard survived the accident. Initial reports stated that the occupants suffered only minor injuries, although local rescue assessments were still ongoing at the time of publication. No fatalities were reported. Images and local reports circulating online showed the aircraft partially submerged near the riverbank after the forced landing. Residents from nearby communities and local emergency responders reportedly assisted survivors before additional authorities arrived at the scene. The Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six is widely used across Latin America for private transport, regional connectivity, and remote-area operations because of its ability to operate from shorter airstrips. However, emergency situations in isolated rainforest regions can become significantly more complex due to geography, weather conditions, and rescue limitations. Authorities have not yet released the exact cause of the engine failure. Brazilian aviation investigators are expected to examine the aircraft and review maintenance records, pilot communications, weather conditions, and engine performance data as part of the ongoing investigation. No official statement had been released by Brazil’s aviation accident investigation authorities.

Engine Failure Forces Hudson River Crash Landing; Instructor, Student Swim to Safety SEO DES: The flight instructor declared an emergency and landed on an ice-covered river about 200 feet from shore, and he & his 17-year-old student swam safely to land SOCIAL: A Cessna 172 Skyhawk operating a night training flight from Long Island MacArthur Airport made an emergency landing on the Hudson River after suffering engine failure near the United States Military Academy. The aircraft had earlier conducted a stop-and-go maneuver at Stewart International Airport before mechanical trouble developed on the return leg. Flight instructor Liam Darcy, who teaches at Long Island Flying, declared an emergency and guided the plane onto an ice-covered section of the river about 200 feet from shore. Darcy and his 17-year-old student exited the aircraft and swam to safety. Both were treated for minor injuries and released. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the engine failure. New York, United States: New details have been recovered from the Hudson River training aircraft crash near Newburgh, providing further clarity on the emergency water landing that saw a flight instructor and his teenage student bring their aircraft down on an icy stretch of water Monday night. The aircraft involved was a Cessna 172 Skyhawk conducting a scheduled night training flight from Long Island MacArthur Airport. Authorities said the plane departed MacArthur Airport at approximately 6:30 p.m. for a routine instructional flight. On board were 31-year-old certified flight instructor Liam Darcy and his 17-year-old student pilot. The flight continued north and performed a stop-and-go maneuver at Stewart International Airport around 7:30 p.m. Shortly after departing Stewart on the return leg, the aircraft began experiencing mechanical trouble near the United States Military Academy, officials said. Darcy took control of the aircraft and declared an emergency as the engine began losing power. When it became clear the aircraft could not reach the airport, he elected to attempt an emergency landing on the Hudson River. The aircraft touched down on an ice-covered section of the river roughly 200 feet from the western shoreline near Newburgh. Both occupants exited the aircraft and swam through frigid water to reach shore. They were later treated for minor injuries and released. Darcy is a flight instructor with Long Island Flying, where he has been instructing the 17-year-old student for approximately a year and a half. The flight was part of structured night training. Air traffic control audio captured from Stewart tower documented the escalating emergency, including the pilot’s transmission that they would not make the airport and were diverting to the river. Preliminary findings indicate the engine lost power completely, forcing the aircraft into a glide before the controlled water landing. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the engine failure. Authorities have stated there is no indication of impairment or criminal activity, and a mechanical examination of the aircraft remains ongoing.

Alberton, South Africa: A routine training flight turned into a near-tragedy on Sunday afternoon when a light aircraft crashed into the tuckshop of Hoërskool Alberton in the City of Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. Both the student pilot and the instructor miraculously escaped without injuries, while no learners or staff at the school were harmed. The aircraft experienced engine failure during a final evaluation flight for a private pilot licence. The instructor attempted an emergency landing on the school’s rugby field, but the plane veered off and struck the school’s tuckshop. Images from the scene showed extensive damage to the small building, with firefighters and emergency responders quickly arriving to secure the crash site. The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services confirmed that no fire broke out after impact, and both occupants were able to walk away from the wreckage. Eyewitnesses reported hearing the sound of a struggling engine moments before the aircraft went down. “We heard the engine sputter, then a loud thud. It was terrifying,” said a resident living near the school. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has opened an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the reported power loss and assess whether any mechanical or procedural failures contributed to the crash. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) said the accident will not disrupt ongoing matric examinations. "We are relieved that there were no casualties. Classes and exams will continue as planned," the department said in a statement. Aviation experts say the outcome was “nothing short of a miracle,” crediting the instructor’s quick decision-making for preventing a greater tragedy in a densely populated area. The aircraft type, registration number, and operator have not yet been disclosed by authorities pending the official SACAA preliminary report.
