Tokyo, Japan: A Skymark Airlines Boeing 737 operating a domestic flight from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Fukuoka made an emergency return on Monday after the crew detected a landing gear tire abnormality mid-flight, later confirmed to involve a ruptured tire, according to Japan’s transport ministry and airline officials. The aircraft, carrying 169 passengers and crew, departed Haneda shortly after 3 p.m. local time and proceeded normally for nearly two hours before the flight crew identified a technical issue related to the landing gear system. Following standard safety procedures, the pilots declared an emergency and initiated a precautionary return to Haneda Airport. The aircraft landed safely back at Haneda without any injuries reported among passengers or crew members. The airline confirmed that all onboard remained safe throughout the incident and that the situation was handled in line with established emergency protocols. After landing, inspections conducted by airport authorities and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism confirmed that one of the aircraft’s tires had ruptured. Officials have not yet determined whether the damage occurred during takeoff, in-flight, or during landing gear operation after departure. Following the emergency landing, Haneda Airport temporarily closed Runway C to conduct safety inspections and remove any possible debris or rubber residue. The runway was later reopened at around 7:40 p.m. local time after checks confirmed safe operating conditions and no structural damage. Skymark Airlines operates a major domestic network from Haneda, connecting key cities across Japan, including Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Okinawa. The airline has not reported any further operational disruptions related to the incident, though the aircraft will undergo a detailed technical inspection before returning to service. Authorities are continuing to review the cause of the tire rupture as part of standard post-incident safety procedures.

Ranchi, India: An IndiGo aircraft operating the Bhubaneswar–Ranchi sector experienced a tail strike while landing at Birsa Munda Airport on the evening of 12 December, officials confirmed. The incident caused a sudden jolt inside the cabin, but all passengers and crew were safe, with no reported injuries. Flight 6E‑7361, an ATR‑72 turboprop carrying about 70 passengers, made contact with the runway with its tail section during touchdown, according to airport authorities. Vinod Kumar, Ranchi Airport Director, confirmed that the impact was jolting but did not endanger passenger safety. “All passengers were safe. The aircraft sustained minor damage and has been grounded pending technical inspection,” Kumar stated. Following the incident, the aircraft was withdrawn from service after preliminary checks indicated it was unfit for further operations. The airline also cancelled the return flight from Ranchi to Bhubaneswar, offering passengers alternative arrangements or rescheduling options. Some passengers were transported by road to nearby destinations. Airport operations remained normal despite the incident. Aviation authorities and IndiGo’s technical team have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tail strike, including factors such as aircraft configuration, weather conditions, or operational technique. Tail strikes occur when the rear portion of an aircraft contacts the runway during take-off or landing. While typically survivable, such incidents require detailed inspection to ensure structural and system integrity. In recent years, IndiGo has faced increased regulatory scrutiny over operational performance and safety standards, particularly amid widespread flight disruptions across its network. Earlier in March 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 operating Flight 6E‑5325 from Mumbai to Chennai also suffered a tail strike during landing at Chennai International Airport, when the aircraft’s empennage made contact with the runway surface. The aircraft was then grounded for technical inspection and necessary repairs, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) launched a formal investigation into the incident to determine contributing factors, including flight operations and aircraft handling.

London, United Kingdom: A United Airlines wide-body aircraft operating a scheduled long-haul service from London to San Francisco made an unscheduled emergency landing at Edinburgh Airport on Thursday after a reported burning smell and a technical alert inside the cockpit. The flight, operating as United Airlines Flight UA949, departed London Heathrow Airport for San Francisco International Airport on December 4. Around 90 minutes after takeoff, while cruising over northern airspace, the crew detected a possible technical issue linked to a brake-temperature sensor along with reports of a burning smell inside the cabin. Following standard emergency procedures, the pilots declared a general emergency (squawk 7700) and diverted the aircraft to the nearest suitable airport. The Boeing 777-200ER, registered N74007, landed safely at Edinburgh Airport at approximately 4:35 p.m. local time. Emergency services were positioned on standby as a precaution, but no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. A total of 162 passengers and 12 crew members were on board at the time of the diversion. United Airlines confirmed the safe landing and said that passengers were provided hotel accommodation and rebooked on alternative flights to continue their journeys. The aircraft remains grounded in Edinburgh pending a full technical inspection. While initial indications point to a false or precautionary alert related to the brake system, aviation officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause. A detailed engineering review is expected before the aircraft returns to service. The incident caused short-term disruption at Edinburgh Airport but did not impact regular operations in the long term.

Vishakhapatnam, India: An Air India Express flight bound for Hyderabad was forced to make an emergency landing at Visakhapatnam (Vizag) airport on Thursday afternoon after a suspected bird strike caused engine trouble shortly after takeoff. Flight IX 2658, operated by Air India Express, departed Vizag around 2:38 PM with 103 passengers onboard. About 10 nautical miles into its climb, the pilots detected abnormal vibrations in one of the engines and suspected a bird strike. Following standard safety protocols, the commander immediately contacted Air Traffic Control and requested clearance to return. The aircraft made a precautionary landing back at Visakhapatnam airport at approximately 3:00 PM. Emergency services were placed on standby, but the landing was completed without incident. All passengers were safely deboarded, and no injuries were reported. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed of the incident, and engineers are carrying out a detailed inspection to confirm the extent of the damage and verify whether a bird strike was indeed the cause of the engine trouble. Air India Express released a statement assuring that passenger safety was never compromised. The airline confirmed that alternative arrangements, including rebooking on later flights and refund options, were being provided to affected passengers. The flight, however, has been cancelled pending safety clearance of the aircraft.
