Moshi, Tanzania: A helicopter conducting a medical evacuation on Mount Kilimanjaro crashed near Barafu Camp on Thursday, killing all five people on board, according to Tanzania’s aviation and regional authorities. The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) said the helicopter went down at high altitude between Barafu Camp and the Kibo summit area, one of the final ascent routes used by climbers. The aircraft was reportedly responding to a distress call involving climbers who had fallen ill on the mountain. Authorities confirmed that those killed included two foreign tourists, identified by local media as Czech nationals, along with a Tanzanian medical doctor, a Tanzanian mountain guide, and the pilot, who was reported to be a Zimbabwean national. The helicopter was operated by a local aviation service provider that regularly conducts high-altitude rescue and medical evacuation missions on Africa’s tallest peak. No other aircraft were involved in the incident. Emergency teams and park authorities reached the crash site after challenging efforts due to the terrain, altitude and rapidly changing weather conditions common in the upper sections of Kilimanjaro. All five occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The TCAA, in coordination with the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), has launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Officials said investigators will examine operational factors, aircraft performance at altitude, weather conditions and pilot communications. No preliminary cause has been released. Mount Kilimanjaro, which rises to nearly 6,000 metres (20,000 feet), attracts tens of thousands of climbers each year. While aviation incidents on the mountain are rare, helicopters are frequently used for emergency evacuations due to altitude sickness and medical emergencies.

Mumbai, India: Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has officially commenced commercial flight operations, marking a major milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure expansion and easing long-standing capacity constraints in the Mumbai metropolitan region. On its first full day of scheduled operations, the airport handled 48 domestic flights, collectively serving more than 4,000 passengers, according to officials and airline data. The launch positions Mumbai as India’s first true dual-airport metropolitan region, complementing the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The inaugural commercial arrival was an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru, which landed earlier in the day and received a ceremonial water salute. Other carriers operating from NMIA on day one included Air India Express, Akasa Air, and Star Air, offering connectivity to multiple domestic destinations. Initial operations at NMIA are being conducted on a limited daily schedule, with authorities confirming that flight volumes and operating hours will be gradually expanded in the coming weeks. The airport is expected to transition to round-the-clock operations once infrastructure readiness and air traffic coordination are fully optimized. Designed to significantly decongest CSMIA, NMIA will play a central role in accommodating Mumbai’s rapidly growing air travel demand. Once fully developed, the airport is projected to handle tens of millions of passengers annually, with future phases including international passenger services and dedicated cargo operations. Navi Mumbai International Airport is positioning itself as more than a transport hub by embedding culture, hospitality and leisure into the passenger journey from day one. Its non-aeronautical ecosystem introduces India-first concepts such as locally rooted dining brands, personalised meet-and-greet services, an in-terminal transit hotel and immersive cultural zones, reflecting a shift toward experience-led airport design. By integrating rest, retail, art and public spaces into its phased rollout, NMIA aims to redefine how airports engage with both travellers and the city, treating the airport as an extension of urban life rather than a standalone transit facility Aviation and government officials have described the launch as a transformational step for the region’s mobility ecosystem. By redistributing domestic traffic between two airports, authorities expect improved operational efficiency, reduced congestion, and better on-time performance for airlines operating in and out of Mumbai. The airport is also expected to act as a catalyst for economic development in Navi Mumbai, supporting employment generation, real estate growth, and logistics expansion.

Montreal, Canada: Global air transport is positioned for a historic expansion in 2026, with passenger volumes and airline revenues reaching new heights even as supply chain constraints and cost pressures persist, according to the latest forecasts from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and related industry reporting. Airlines worldwide are expected to carry approximately 5.2 billion passengers in 2026, marking a continued recovery from the pandemic era and outpacing previous demand projections, the industry body and multiple analysts report. The global airline industry’s combined net profit is forecast at around US$41 billion in 2026, an increase from roughly US$39.5 billion in 2025, though profit margins are expected to remain thin by historical standards. “This growth is extremely welcome considering the headwinds that the industry faces including rising costs from supply chain bottlenecks, geopolitical conflict, sluggish global trade and increasing regulatory burdens,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General, in the association’s latest outlook. Industry revenues are forecast to exceed US$1 trillion in 2026, broadening the sector’s economic footprint and anchoring the recovery in passenger demand. Revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) are expected to expand by around 4.9 percent, driven by continued travel appetite in key markets across Asia Pacific, the Middle East and the Americas. Seat load factors, a key measure of airline efficiency, are projected to rise to record levels of nearly 84 percent, indicating strong capacity utilization even as aircraft availability tightens. The Middle East is projected to outpace all regions in profitability in 2026, with carriers delivering the highest net profit margin (about 9.3 percent) and the highest profit per passenger (approximately US$28.6). This performance is attributed to strategic investment, supportive policy frameworks and the region’s role as a global connecting hub. However, IATA officials caution that profit strength is uneven, with some carriers still under pressure from geopolitical instability, blocked funds and uneven infrastructure development. Despite robust demand, airlines face persistent supply chain disruptions that continue to constrain aircraft deliveries and fleet renewal efforts. Production backlogs for new aircraft and engines remain at historic highs, creating a structural mismatch between airline requirements and manufacturing capacity that is unlikely to normalise before the early 2030s. Industry analysts warn that these bottlenecks including delays in delivery slots and parts shortages not only limit capacity growth but also contribute to rising maintenance costs and an aging global fleet. While aggregate profits are climbing, the net profit margin is expected to hover around 3.9 percent in 2026, modest by historical standards and reflective of sustained cost pressures. Factors such as labour costs, regulatory compliance, fuel price volatility and infrastructure charges continue to weigh on airline financials. Analysts also note that cargo operations remain resilient, though growth in cargo tonne kilometres is forecast to be more moderate compared with pre-pandemic peaks. Industry forecasts underscore a cautiously optimistic outlook for global aviation: strong passenger demand and revenue growth amid ongoing structural challenges. As airlines prepare for operational and financial execution in 2026, capacity management, supply chain resolves, and regional market dynamics will likely determine which carriers sustain profitability and growth.

Islamabad, Pakistan: Pakistan has completed the long-delayed privatisation of its loss-making national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), selling a majority stake to a local business consortium as part of economic reforms tied to International Monetary Fund (IMF) support. A consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation emerged as the highest bidder in a government-run auction, agreeing to acquire 75% of PIA for approximately 135 billion Pakistani rupees (around $482 million). The Pakistani government will retain the remaining 25% stake. Officials said the sale marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to restructure state-owned enterprises and stabilise public finances amid a prolonged economic crisis. The privatisation followed a televised bidding process overseen by Pakistan’s Privatisation Commission after earlier attempts to offload the airline failed due to a lack of qualified bidders. Authorities restructured PIA ahead of the auction, transferring a large portion of its historical debt and liabilities to the government to make the carrier more attractive to investors. According to government statements cited by international media, operational control of PIA is expected to transition to the new owners from April 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and completion of legal formalities. PIA has struggled for years with mounting losses, an ageing fleet, safety compliance issues, and international route restrictions, including a prolonged ban on flights to the European Union. The airline has required repeated state bailouts, becoming a key concern for lenders during negotiations with the IMF. The IMF has consistently pushed Pakistan to reduce fiscal pressure by privatising or reforming loss-making public entities, making PIA’s sale a central component of the country’s broader economic reform programme. While the government has described the transaction as a step toward restoring efficiency and competitiveness at the airline, labour unions and opposition figures have raised concerns about job security and transparency. Officials have said employee protections and service continuity will be addressed during the transition phase. The new owners are expected to focus on fleet modernisation, route rationalisation, and restoring international operations as Pakistan looks to revive its national carrier after years of financial distress.

New Delhi, India: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has granted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to two proposed airline operators Al Hind Air & FlyExpress in a strategic move aimed at expanding competition in India’s domestic aviation market following recent operational turmoil involving market‑leader IndiGo. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said in a social media post that the ministry has met with representatives from three emerging carriers Shankh Air, Al Hind Air and FlyExpress over the past week as part of efforts to encourage new entrants to the sector. While Shankh Air had already received its regulatory clearance earlier, both Al Hind Air and FlyExpress secured their NOCs this week. Al Hind Air is backed by Kerala’s Alhind Group, and FlyExpress is a Hyderabad‑based enterprise traditionally focused on courier and cargo operations. Shankh Air’s proposed business plan includes connecting major cities within Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra and Gorakhpur, with affordable air connectivity options. The government’s approvals come amid heightened scrutiny of India’s aviation market structure. Earlier this month, IndiGo’s failure to fully adapt to new crew rostering regulations triggered the cancellation of thousands of flights, stranding thousands of passengers. Industry analysts and officials have called for greater competition to prevent future systemic shocks. The Civil Aviation Ministry has highlighted existing schemes such as UDAN as instrumental in enabling smaller regional players including Star Air, India One Air and Fly91 to expand connectivity, while stressing there is substantial scope for further growth in what is one of the world’s fastest‑growing aviation markets. In the aftermath of IndiGo’s operational disruption, regulators have initiated multiple reviews. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has taken cognisance of complaints alleging antitrust violations by the airline, which holds a dominant market share. The initial assessment could lead to a detailed investigation if evidence of market abuse is found. IndiGo’s operations, which stabilised in mid‑December with restoration to roughly 2,200 daily flights, are also under regulatory examination. Authorities have imposed temporary fare caps and ordered expedited refunds for affected passengers.   While the approvals for Al Hind Air and FlyExpress signal a policy pivot towards diversification, aviation experts caution that long‑term viability for new carriers hinges on tackling structural challenges such as high operating costs, fuel taxation, and aircraft acquisition bottlenecks. The government’s move to issue NOCs to new airlines reflects a broader strategy to build resilience in India’s air transport sector by reducing over‑dependence on a small number of carriers and enhancing choices for millions of domestic flyers.

Ankara, Turkey: Libya’s Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, and four senior military officials were killed Tuesday evening when the private jet carrying them crashed near the Turkish capital Ankara after losing radio contact shortly after takeoff, officials in Libya and Turkey confirmed. The Dassault Falcon 50 business jet, bearing Maltese registration 9H-DFJ and bound for Tripoli from Ankara’s Esenboğa Airport, took off at approximately 1710 GMT on Dec. 23. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said radio contact was lost roughly 42 minutes later after the aircraft issued an emergency landing request while flying over the Haymana district south of Ankara. Search and rescue teams located the wreckage about 2 kilometres south of Kesikkavak Village in Haymana, where Turkish gendarmerie units responded to the distress signal. Authorities said there were no survivors aboard the aircraft. Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah confirmed the deaths of al-Haddad and four aides in a statement describing the crash as a “tragic accident” and “a great loss for the nation.” The senior officers killed alongside al-Haddad included the commander of Libya’s ground forces, the director of the military manufacturing authority, a senior adviser, and a military photographer, Libyan officials said. In response to the tragedy, Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Unity declared three days of national mourning, directing that flags be flown at half-mast and that official celebrations be suspended during the period. Turkish officials said the jet transmitted an emergency landing notification near Haymana before communications ceased. The interior minister and defence ministry have launched a formal investigation into the sequence of events, with early indications pointing toward a technical malfunction rather than sabotage, although authorities have not yet released a definitive cause. The flight disruption also caused temporary airspace restrictions at Ankara’s airport as controllers attempted to track and respond to the emergency. Al-Haddad had been in Ankara for high-level defence consultations with Turkish officials, including meetings with Turkey’s Defence Minister and his Turkish counterpart, focusing on bilateral military cooperation and regional security issues. The crash comes amidst broader Turkish-Libyan ties. Turkey recently extended its military deployment mandate in Libya and has engaged with both Libya’s western government and eastern factions as part of its “One Libya” policy. Al-Haddad, a career army officer who had led Libya’s military since 2020, played a prominent role in United Nations-backed efforts to unify Libya’s fragmented armed forces after years of civil conflict. His death is expected to have significant political and strategic repercussions in Tripoli and across Libya’s divided political landscape.

New Delhi, India: An Air India Boeing 777 operating a domestic flight from Delhi to Mumbai made a precautionary return to Indira Gandhi International Airport shortly after take-off on Monday afternoon after pilots detected an abnormal drop in engine oil pressure, according to airline and official sources. The wide-body aircraft, carrying 335 passengers, was airborne when cockpit indications showed low oil pressure in one of the engines. Following standard operating procedures, the flight crew decided to discontinue the journey and return to Delhi as a safety precaution. Air India confirmed that the aircraft landed safely without incident and that all passengers disembarked normally. There were no injuries reported. Preliminary information indicates that the issue was linked to the aircraft’s right engine. Engineering teams were immediately deployed to inspect the aircraft upon landing, and the plane was taken out of service for technical checks. Passengers were accommodated on alternate flights, while some were offered refunds or rescheduling options, airline officials said. Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed of the incident and is reviewing the technical report submitted by the airline, as per established procedures. Officials emphasized that such turn-backs are precautionary measures designed to ensure flight safety and are not uncommon in commercial aviation.

Edinburgh, United Kingdom: A Ryanair passenger aircraft bound for Faro, Portugal, was evacuated on Monday morning after its wingtip struck a fuel truck while taxiing for departure at Edinburgh Airport. The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time, prompting immediate safety procedures and a temporary disruption for travellers on board. The flight, operating as FR5667 on a Boeing 737 MAX 8‑200, was preparing to depart when the collision with a truck cab occurred. No injuries were reported, and airport operations continued with minimal interruption, airport officials confirmed. Passengers were asked to disembark from the aircraft as a precautionary measure. A spokesperson from Ryanair said the aircraft’s wing tip made contact with the cab of a fuel truck during low‑speed taxiing and that travellers “disembarked normally.” A replacement aircraft was provided to complete the service to Faro, departing later in the afternoon. Emergency services were mobilised following the incident, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attending after being alerted. Firefighters were placed on standby but no fire broke out, and the response was stood down after initial assessments. One passenger told, it was a frightening moment but noted that the aircraft was moving at slow speed, which contributed to the lack of injuries. Airport representatives confirmed there was no significant impact on broader flight schedules. After disembarking, passengers were accommodated with small vouchers while they awaited the replacement aircraft. Flight tracking data indicated the delayed service eventually departed around 12:15 p.m., approximately two hours after its originally scheduled departure time. Edinburgh Airport reiterated that safety protocols were followed and that operations remained largely unaffected by the ground collision. Investigations into the precise sequence of events and contributing factors are underway by the relevant authorities, including airport ground operations and airline officials.

Nadi, Fiji: Fiji Airways has issued a public apology after passengers on an Auckland-bound flight experienced a delay of more than 20 hours, on 20 December, triggering widespread criticism over communication gaps and passenger care during the disruption. The affected flight, scheduled to depart Nadi for Auckland, was delayed due to a combination of operational and safety-related constraints, according to the airline. Fiji Airways confirmed that the aircraft eventually departed after engineers completed the required checks and operational clearances. In a statement, the national carrier said safety considerations remained the overriding factor behind the prolonged delay and stressed that the decision to hold the flight was taken to ensure compliance with aviation safety standards . Passengers, however, described long hours of uncertainty at Nadi International Airport, citing limited information, accommodation challenges, and difficulties accessing timely assistance. Some travellers told local media they were left unclear about departure timelines and support arrangements during the extended wait . Following the incident, Fiji Airways acknowledged shortcomings in its handling of customer communication and said it has begun reviewing its disruption-management procedures. The airline confirmed it is assessing improvements to real-time updates, frontline coordination, and passenger welfare protocols during extended delays . As a goodwill measure, Fiji Airways has offered affected passengers discount vouchers for future travel, while reiterating that safety-driven delays, though rare, can result in unavoidable schedule disruptions . Government officials weighed in as public reaction intensified, with senior leaders acknowledging passenger frustration while backing the airline’s emphasis on safety compliance. Officials noted that operational disruptions must be balanced against strict regulatory and safety obligations in international aviation . The incident has reignited broader discussion in the Pacific aviation sector around airline accountability, crisis communication, and passenger rights during prolonged delays, particularly as regional travel demand continues to rise.

Fort Lauderdale, United States: Pilots and flight attendants at ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines have ratified revised labour agreements that include significant pay and benefit concessions intended to help the airline reduce costs and navigate through its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The unions representing both groups, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) voted in favour of revised collective bargaining agreements that will lower key compensation elements and generate approximately $100 million in annual savings, Spirit and union representatives said. Under the terms of the new pilot deal, hourly pay rates will be reduced by about 8 per cent, and employer retirement contributions will be cut in half from 16 per cent to 8 per cent for 2026 and 2027. The agreement also includes scheduled pay restorations, a 4 per cent increase beginning in August 2028 and another 4 per cent in January 2029 contingent on future financial performance. The flight attendants’ agreement preserves base wages and healthcare benefits while reducing incentive overtime pay and eliminating ground holding pay. Changes to overtime thresholds are slated to take effect from mid-2027. Under the revised terms, Spirit will receive $50 million immediately to cover day-to-day expenses, with another $50 million available once it advances plans to either reorganize as a standalone carrier or pursue a sale. Union leaders framed the votes as a strategic choice to keep control of labour terms rather than leave decisions to the bankruptcy court. Ballots were also structured to allow employees to retain their contracts’ core protections and to enable “snapback” of concessions if predefined financial targets are met. Spirit filed for Chapter 11 protection for the second time in a year in August, citing continued losses and cash-flow challenges. The carrier has said it expects to operate at a loss through 2027 and has pursued various cost-cutting measures, including workforce reductions, network cuts and fleet adjustments, to conserve cash. "We continue to provide high-value travel options that benefit American consumers whether they fly with us or not, and look forward to welcoming our guests throughout the holiday season and beyond," CEO Dave Davis said in a statement. The labour agreements still require approval from the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York before they take full effect. The company filed paperwork with the court on Dec. 11 seeking authorisation for the revised contracts. The votes come amid broader operational challenges for Spirit. Earlier restructuring moves included furloughs of flight attendants and pilots, reductions in flight schedules, and the scrapping of further planned pilot furloughs after updated attrition modeling. Spirit has also secured emergency financing to support operations through the holiday travel season and beyond while continuing its restructuring efforts. As the Chapter 11 process continues, analysts say the labour concessions and financial lifelines are crucial to maintaining service and preserving the airline’s viability in a competitive US market characterised by rising costs and stiff competition from larger carriers.

Lyon, France: An Air France Airbus A320 operating flight AF7562 from Paris-Orly to Ajaccio was forced to divert and make an emergency landing at Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport on Saturday, December 20, after a technical problem developed shortly after departure, the airline and multiple sources confirmed. The aircraft, carrying 173 passengers, departed from Paris-Orly and climbed to cruising altitude when crew detected a technical issue that prompted them to declare an emergency and reroute to the nearest suitable airport as a precautionary measure, according to Air France’s statement. The airline described the fault as a technical problem that did not compromise the aircraft’s airworthiness, emphasizing that crews followed procedures by shutting down the affected engine and diverting safely. The aircraft touched down at Lyon at approximately 18:25 local time, with no injuries reported. According to aviation specialists cited by French media, the incident likely involved a “pompage moteur”, a known phenomenon where air pockets in the engine cause significant vibrations, forcing pilots to shut down the engine. Once the engine was cut, vibrations subsided and the Airbus A320 continued to land normally on the remaining operational engine. Several passengers described a frightening experience in the cabin, reporting strong vibrations, alarms activating, and what they perceived as flashes or flames near one wing. One traveler told RTL that the aircraft “suddenly dropped” and multiple control lights illuminated, adding to onboard alarm. Others recounted hearing a loud “boom” and visible movements that led to panic among some passengers. Despite passenger perceptions, Air France and aviation experts clarified that there was no confirmed engine fire and no smoke warnings were triggered during the flight. Some brief flames at the engine exhaust area limited in duration and contained within the engine could explain eyewitness descriptions but did not indicate an in-flight fire event. After the unscheduled landing in Lyon, ground teams accommodated all passengers and arranged onward travel. Air France rebooked the 173 passengers on a later flight from Lyon to Bastia, which departed at 22:39 and arrived at 23:50. From Bastia, passengers were transferred by bus to Ajaccio, arriving in the early hours of Sunday morning. The airline expressed regret for the disruption and reiterated that passenger and crew safety remained the company’s top priority throughout the event.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
