Newark, United States: A serious mid-air security incident aboard a United Airlines flight prompted an emergency declaration after a passenger allegedly attacked a crew member and attempted to gain access to the cockpit shortly before landing in the United States.
The incident took place on United Airlines Flight 1837, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX, which was flying from Puerto Plata to Newark Liberty International Airport on May 2, 2026. The situation escalated during the aircraft’s descent phase as it approached Newark.
Authorities said a 48-year-old male passenger became unruly and turned violent onboard. He allegedly attacked a flight attendant, attempted to open the forward cabin door, and tried to force entry into the cockpit. Air traffic control audio captured the urgency of the situation, with the flight crew declaring an emergency and reporting that a passenger had attacked the crew and was attempting to access the flight deck.
In response, the pilots requested immediate law enforcement assistance upon arrival. Cabin crew acted swiftly to restrain the individual and prevent further escalation. The aircraft’s reinforced cockpit door, a standard post-9/11 security feature, ensured that no unauthorized access to the flight deck was possible at any point during the incident.
Despite the disruption, the flight continued its approach and landed safely at Newark without diversion. There were 170 passengers and six crew members onboard. No serious injuries were reported.
Law enforcement officials from the Port Authority Police Department met the aircraft at the gate. The passenger was taken into custody without further incident and was subsequently transported to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Authorities have not publicly released his identity, and investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
In a statement, United Airlines confirmed that local law enforcement responded to meet the aircraft due to an unruly passenger and commended the crew for their handling of the situation. The airline emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew remained its top priority.
