Nairobi, Kenya: A Kenya Airways flight bound for New York returned safely to Nairobi on Saturday night after the crew detected a technical issue involving the aircraft’s flight controls while cruising over Chad.
The affected service, Flight KQ002D, had departed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi for John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York on July 5 when the crew identified a flight controls spoiler malfunction at approximately 7:50 p.m. local time.
Following established safety procedures, the flight crew decided to discontinue the transatlantic journey and return to Nairobi as a precaution. The aircraft landed safely at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly after midnight on July 6, where it was received by Kenya Airways’ engineering teams for technical inspection.
In an official statement, Kenya Airways confirmed the incident, stating that Flight KQ002D “experienced a flight controls spoiler malfunction while over Chad.” The airline added that the crew “followed all the stipulated safety procedures” before deciding to return to Nairobi, emphasizing that the precautionary action was taken to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
The carrier also apologized for the disruption caused to passengers, reaffirming that the safety of its guests and crew remains its highest priority. Kenya Airways said affected travelers would receive assistance, including alternative travel arrangements, while engineers inspected the aircraft before it could return to service.
No injuries were reported among passengers or crew during the incident. Spoilers are movable panels located on an aircraft’s wings that assist with reducing lift, controlling speed, aiding descent, and improving braking performance after landing. Although a spoiler system malfunction does not necessarily compromise the aircraft’s ability to fly safely, it requires careful assessment by the flight crew and maintenance personnel, particularly on long-haul operations.
