DGCA Plans ranking system for Flying Training Organizations in India, by evaluating flight schools based on performance metrics & time taken to obtain a CPL

India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is considering introducing a ranking system for Flying Training Organisations (FTOs) in India. The proposed system would evaluate flight schools based on various performance metrics, including the average time taken by students to obtain a Commercial Pilot License (CPL).

The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance transparency in pilot training, improve efficiency, and help aspiring pilots make informed decisions when selecting a flight school. CPL training durations in India vary significantly, with some students experiencing delays of up to two years or more. This inconsistency has led many Indian students to pursue training abroad, where licensing processes are often faster.

According to The Times of India, the DGCA’s ranking system would assess FTOs based on CPL completion time, fleet strength, safety record, and instructor-to-student ratio. By making this data publicly available, the DGCA aims to create a more competitive environment that encourages flight schools to improve training quality and minimize delays.

This initiative comes at a time when India’s aviation sector is experiencing rapid growth, increasing the demand for skilled pilots. A ranking system could push flight schools to upgrade their infrastructure, streamline training programs, and adopt best practices to ensure timely CPL certification.

While this proposal has been reported in the media, the DGCA has not made any official announcement regarding its implementation. Aspiring pilots and industry stakeholders are advised to monitor DGCA updates for further details.

If introduced, this ranking system could play a crucial role in improving the overall quality and efficiency of pilot training in India, benefiting both students and the aviation industry.
