
Toulouse, France: Qantas and Airbus are preparing for another major milestone in the airline’s long-running Project Sunrise programme, with the first Airbus A350-1000 ULR scheduled to undertake a marathon nonstop certification flight from Toulouse, France, to Melbourne, Australia, later this month. If completed as planned, the journey is expected to last around 22 hours, making it one of the longest flights ever operated by an Airbus test aircraft.
The aircraft assigned to the mission is Airbus A350-1000 ULR MSN 707, currently registered F-WULR. It is the first of 12 A350-1000 ULR aircraft ordered by Qantas for Project Sunrise and has been serving as the lead aircraft in Airbus’ certification campaign since completing its maiden flight from Toulouse on June 2, 2026. During that first flight, the aircraft remained airborne for 3 hours and 43 minutes, climbed to just over 41,000 feet, and carried extensive flight-test instrumentation.
The planned Toulouse–Melbourne sector will cover approximately 17,000 kilometres (about 10,560 miles) nonstop. Unlike a commercial service, the flight will be operated by Airbus’ dedicated flight-test crew and engineers to validate the aircraft’s performance, fuel consumption, systems and endurance under ultra-long-range operating conditions before certification is completed. Airbus has equipped MSN 707 with specialist flight-test equipment throughout the programme, and the aircraft will later be converted into its final passenger configuration for Qantas.
Australian media reports indicate the aircraft is expected to arrive in Melbourne on July 24, subject to Airbus’ final operational schedule. Following its arrival, the aircraft is expected to undergo additional evaluations before returning to Europe as Airbus completes the A350-1000 ULR certification campaign. While the arrival date has been widely reported, Airbus and Qantas have not formally announced the schedule.
The A350-1000 ULR has been developed specifically for Qantas’ Project Sunrise, enabling nonstop flights from Australia’s east coast to destinations previously beyond the reach of commercial airliners. Airbus says the aircraft is capable of flying nearly 10,000 nautical miles with flight times of up to 22 hours, allowing direct services from Sydney to London and Sydney to New York.
To achieve the additional range, Airbus has incorporated a new 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank, structural enhancements and revised fuel system architecture unique to the ultra-long-range variant. The aircraft is also fitted with a higher maximum take-off weight and other modifications designed to support the world’s longest commercial passenger flights.
Qantas ordered 12 A350-1000ULRs in May 2022 as the centrepiece of Project Sunrise. The airline’s first production aircraft, named Vega, is scheduled for delivery in April 2027, with the inaugural non-stop Sydney–London service planned for October 2027. A nonstop Sydney–New York service is expected to follow.
The customised aircraft will carry 238 passengers, significantly fewer than a standard A350-1000, to maximise range and passenger comfort. The cabin will feature 6 First Suites, 52 Business Suites, 40 Premium Economy seats and 140 Economy seats, along with a dedicated Wellbeing Zone where passengers can stretch, hydrate and move around during flights lasting up to 22 hours.
Once Airbus completes certification, MSN 707 will be retrofitted with Qantas’ final cabin interior before entering commercial service. The remaining aircraft in the 12-aircraft fleet will be delivered progressively, enabling Qantas to expand its ultra-long-haul network and redefine nonstop travel between Australia and major global destinations.
