Derbyshire, UK: Two men have died following a light aircraft crash at Darley Moor racetrack near Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The incident occurred around 11:30am on Tuesday, prompting a large-scale emergency response and the launch of an official investigation.

According to Derbyshire Police, emergency crews from multiple fire stations including Ashbourne, Wirksworth, Nottingham Road, Staveley, and Uttoxeter responded to the scene shortly after receiving reports of the crash. The fire service later scaled back operations, with crews from Ashbourne and Wirksworth remaining on site to support police efforts.

Authorities have confirmed that the victims’ families have been informed, and a file is being prepared for the coroner. “Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time,” police said in a statement.

Eyewitnesses described seeing air ambulances, fire engines, and a Major Rescue Service vehicle rushing to the scene. According to BBC aircraft came down near a wooded area of the track, with recovery efforts underway throughout the day.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched a probe to determine the cause of the crash. “An accident in the Ashbourne area of Derbyshire involving a light aircraft has been notified to the AAIB. An investigation has been launched and a multidisciplinary team of inspectors are on their way to the accident site,” a spokesperson confirmed.

As a precaution, flying restrictions have been imposed over the Darley Moor area. An order issued on behalf of the transport secretary bans aircraft from flying below 1,600 feet above mean sea level over the area, unless authorized by Derbyshire Police.

Darley Moor racetrack, which typically hosts motorcycle racing events between March and October, was closed to the public in the aftermath of the crash. Authorities have urged people to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
