India: On December 9, 2024, SpiceJet had a difficult day as two of its planes had mid-air issues in a matter of hours. Although the airline’s emergency response procedures were put to the test in both incidents, all passengers and crew made a safe landing. These incidents demonstrate the necessity of safety measures, skilled crew members, and quick decision-making in modern aviation.
Kochi-Bound Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Chennai
A SpiceJet Q400 aircraft en route from Chennai to Kochi experienced a technical glitch shortly after takeoff at 6:30 AM. The flight, carrying 117 passengers and crew members, returned to Chennai and made a safe emergency landing at 7:15 AM after the pilot communicated with the Chennai Airport Control Room.
A SpiceJet spokesperson stated, “SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Chennai to Kochi returned back to Chennai due to a technical issue on December 9, 2024. The plane landed safely, and the passengers deplaned”.
Airport officials granted travelers access to lounges as engineers investigated the source of the problem. Passengers praised the cabin crew’s professionalism, noting that they stayed calm and offered clear instructions during the issue.
The flight from Delhi to Shillong was diverted to Patna
In a separate incident just hours later, SpiceJet aircraft SEJ-2950, which was on its route from Delhi to Shillong encountered a bird hit which caused a crack in the cockpit windshield, causing the pilot to take the precautionary measures.
The flight, with 80 passengers and crew on board, was diverted to Patna’s Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport and landed safely at 8:52 AM.
Patna airport director Anchal Prakash confirmed speaking to PTI, “A Delhi-Shillong flight of SpiceJet faced a technical issue, prompting its diversion to Patna, where it landed safely”. Alternative arrangements were laid out for the passengers .
The passengers were safely deboarded, and their subsequent travel arrangements were swiftly made. This incident emphasizes the need for timely decisions and attention to safety measures.
Aviation Safety Protocols Prove Their Value
Both of the December 9 incidents highlight how crucial strict safety regulations are in the aviation industry. Bird attacks and technical issues are uncommon, yet they are somehow the risks associated with flying.
