Toronto, Canada: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-784, operating from Toronto to Karachi, returned to Toronto Pearson International Airport shortly after departure after the crew received a fire alarm warning from the aircraft’s cargo area.
The incident occurred on the Karachi-bound service on August 30, 2026 with reports stating that the captain received an indication of a possible fire in a panel associated with the cargo hold. The captain immediately contacted air traffic control and requested permission to return to Toronto as a precaution. After receiving clearance, the aircraft safely turned back and landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Reports identified the aircraft as a Boeing 777. The aircraft was subsequently moved to a parking area, where emergency personnel and technical teams began inspecting it. Fire brigade personnel examined the cargo hold while PIA’s engineering team carried out its own technical checks.
PIA said 130 passengers were onboard. Following the landing, “all passengers were disembarked and transferred to the airport lounge in accordance with the airline’s standard operating procedures. No injuries among passengers or crew have been reported.”
A PIA spokesperson said “the captain contacted the ATC tower after the fire warning appeared in the cargo area and requested an emergency landing.” “The spokesperson also said the PIA engineering team was inspecting the aircraft and that fire brigade personnel were checking the cargo hold.”
At this stage, there is no confirmed indication from PIA that an actual fire or smoke was found inside the cargo compartment. The warning itself triggered the precautionary return and emergency response, while inspections were launched to establish what caused the indication. PIA has not publicly identified whether the alert resulted from a genuine fire, smoke detection or a technical malfunction.
