Virginia, United States: An American Eagle flight operated by American Airlines from Philadelphia to Wilmington, North Carolina, was diverted to Norfolk International Airport in Virginia after smoke was reportedly detected in the cabin.
The flight, which was traveling from Philadelphia International Airport to Wilmington International Airport, was diverted to Norfolk International Airport (ORF), where it landed safely. The plane landed at 6:46 p.m. and taxied to the gate under its own power, where the 40 passengers deplaned normally. There were three crew members also on board.
According to airport officials, the aircraft was diverted following a report of smoke onboard. Emergency crews were on standby at Norfolk International Airport as the aircraft arrived. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
American Airlines said the aircraft was removed from service after landing and would undergo inspection by a maintenance team.
In a statement, American Airlines said Flight 5816, operated under the American Eagle brand, diverted to Norfolk International Airport due to a “possible mechanical issue.” The airline did not indicate that the aircraft experienced a fire, and the exact source of the reported smoke was not immediately confirmed.
The incident remains under review, with further details expected as the aircraft undergoes maintenance inspection.
The diversion caused a disruption to the flight’s scheduled journey from Philadelphia to Wilmington, with passengers ultimately arriving at an alternate airport in Virginia.
