Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: An AirAsia flight arriving from Singapore experienced a cabin interior incident during landing in Kuala Lumpur, after a section of the overhead panel became dislodged, prompting concern among passengers but resulting in no injuries.
The incident occurred on April 4 aboard flight AK720, operated by an Airbus A320, as the aircraft was touching down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2. According to the airline, the aircraft landed safely at approximately 10:22 pm.
Passenger accounts and airline statements indicate that a portion of the overhead cabin panel housing lighting components came loose shortly after touchdown. Parts of the panel fell onto unoccupied seats, while other sections remained suspended by wiring.
Witnesses on board described hearing an unusual noise during landing before noticing the panel had detached. Despite the unexpected occurrence, the landing itself was reported as normal, and the aircraft taxied without further incident.
Crucially, no passengers were seated directly beneath the affected section, preventing injuries. All passengers and crew disembarked safely after arrival.
In an official statement, AirAsia confirmed that the issue was caused by a section of hose connected to the cabin panel becoming loose during landing. The airline emphasised that the aircraft had undergone all required maintenance checks prior to departure, including routine 36-hour inspections involving both visual and physical assessments.
AirAsia Malaysia General Manager Captain Fareh Mazputra stated that the cabin crew responded promptly in accordance with safety procedures, assisting affected passengers and relocating those seated near the impacted area.
Following the incident, the airline’s engineering team conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft upon arrival. The affected panel was subsequently refitted and secured in line with established safety standards before the aircraft returned to service.
The airline apologised for the inconvenience caused and reiterated that safety remains its top operational priority.
