Los Angeles, United States: Heart Aerospace has completed the first flight of its X1 demonstrator, marking a major milestone in the development of large-scale electric aviation. The full-scale aircraft flew on August 12, 2026, from the company’s X1 flight-test base at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York, becoming the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown. The X1 measures 106 feet across its wings and 76 feet from nose to tail, with a takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 pounds. Its first flight was piloted and lasted 27 minutes. During the mission, the aircraft climbed to 1,100 feet above ground level, while its all-electric propulsion system delivered more than one megawatt of power. The flight was conducted under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category. Heart said the test profile covered taxiing, takeoff, climb, maneuvering and landing, with the mission intended to demonstrate fully electric flight at a scale relevant to commercial airline operations. Powered entirely by batteries, the X1 consumed approximately $5 worth of electricity during the flight. Heart Aerospace linked the result to the potential for electric propulsion to reduce aircraft operating costs and lessen airlines’ exposure to fluctuations in global oil prices. The company noted that global jet fuel prices averaged $3.50 per gallon during the week ending August 7, 2026, representing a 63% year-over-year increase. “With the first flight of X1, Heart Aerospace has demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner,” said Anders Forslund, Founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace. He added that electric commercial aircraft could “fundamentally reshape airline economics” and ultimately reduce air-travel costs, forming part of Heart’s vision for more affordable, frequent and cleaner regional air services. The X1 is not intended to enter commercial service itself. Instead, it is a full-scale demonstrator representing Heart’s planned ES-30 production aircraft. The company is using the aircraft to validate technologies, aerodynamics, flight performance and its ability to design, build, test, operate and continuously improve an electric commercial aircraft. The ES-30 is being developed as a conventional fixed-wing, 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner and is planned for FAA Part 25 certification. Heart said the aircraft has secured customer commitments from United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX, with entry into service targeted for 2031. “The first flight of X1 is a major technical achievement for Heart Aerospace, a company United has been proud to support,” said Michael Leskinen, Chief Financial Officer of United Airlines. He said electric commercial aircraft have the potential to improve the passenger experience while strengthening United’s business and added that the airline looks forward to the continued development of the ES-30 and its potential future role within United’s network. Air Canada also highlighted the milestone as part of its support for new aviation technologies. “The energy transition for aviation will require a range of solutions, from operational efficiencies to sustainable aviation fuels, and ultimately the development of new aircraft technologies,” said John Di Bert, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Air Canada. He said the airline’s investment in Heart Aerospace and the ES-30 reflects its commitment to technologies that could transform aviation. According to Heart, the ES-30 is expected to reduce aircraft operating costs by more than 40% compared with legacy regional aircraft once it enters service. The company attributes the projected reduction to lower energy costs, simpler electric propulsion and electrified flight systems requiring less maintenance, as well as improved aircraft availability and reliability supported by an integrated electronics and software architecture. Heart expects that cost advantage to increase as battery technology advances. The company also points to technology-enabled improvements in crew efficiency and the ES-30’s lower exposure to a growing range of aviation emissions taxes and fees as factors that could strengthen the economic case for the aircraft over time. “Through the X1 program, Heart has built the capability to design, build, test, operate, and continuously improve a clean-sheet electric commercial aircraft,” said Ben Stabler, Chief Technology Officer at Heart Aerospace. He said the company is transferring that capability into the ES-30, describing it as Heart’s first production aircraft and the basis of a wider technology platform for electric airliners. Heart is already developing the first pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing plant in Los Angeles. Flight testing of that aircraft is scheduled to begin in 2028, ahead of the company’s targeted 2031 entry into service. The company describes the X1 flight as a step toward bringing electric propulsion into the airliner category. Heart Aerospace said the aircraft’s first flight demonstrates electric flight at commercial-airliner scale while advancing the technologies needed for its planned hybrid-electric regional aircraft.
