Fatal plane crash

North Carolina, United States: A small private plane crashed in a field near Iotla Valley Elementary School in Macon County on Thursday afternoon, killing all three people on board. Authorities have confirmed that the deceased include award-winning Nashville songwriter Brett James, 57. The Cirrus SR22T aircraft (tail number N218VB) went down shortly after 3 p.m. local time on September 18, just west of the school grounds in Franklin. The aircraft is registered to James and had departed from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville, Tennessee, earlier that day, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Macon County Sheriff’s Office and local media reports confirmed the fatalities. Songwriter Brett James, whose career spanned more than two decades, was among those killed. He was known for penning hits including “Jesus, Take the Wheel” (Carrie Underwood) and “When the Sun Goes Down” (Kenny Chesney). James’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Nashville music community, where he was regarded as one of the most versatile and prolific writers of his generation. His songs, often blending country and pop influences, earned him Grammy Awards and recognition from both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. The identities of the two other victims have not yet been officially released. While the crash site was close to Iotla Valley Elementary School, officials confirmed that no students or staff were injured. The Macon County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the wreckage was located in a field adjacent to the school and did not impact school property. Parents and staff were quickly notified, and emergency crews secured the area. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the accident. The North Carolina Highway Patrol assisted local law enforcement in securing the crash site. The FAA is expected to release a preliminary accident report within the next few days, though full investigations can take months. Brett James’s career began as a recording artist before he transitioned to songwriting, where he built a reputation for crafting chart-topping hits across multiple genres. Beyond country music, he collaborated with artists in pop and rock, including Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, and Kelly Clarkson. His songwriting not only brought him industry acclaim but also cemented his influence on Nashville’s modern sound. In addition to writing, James was active in mentoring young musicians and was deeply respected within Music Row’s creative community. According to the FAA, small private aircraft like the Cirrus SR22T are among the most commonly flown in the U.S., and while equipped with advanced safety features including parachute recovery systems accidents still occur.

Manitoba, Canada: Four people are dead and a young pilot is seriously injured after a float plane crashed in a remote area roughly 40 kilometres south of St. Theresa Point First Nation, Manitoba, on Saturday evening. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said the single-engine de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver went down near Makepeace Lake while carrying five people. All four passengers, two men aged 53 and 49 and two women who both were 50 were residents of St. Theresa Point First Nation and died at the scene. The 20-year-old pilot, the sole survivor, sustained serious injuries but is expected to recover. Authorities confirmed he was airlifted to hospital after being located by rescue teams in difficult nighttime conditions. The crash site was located after RCMP received an alert from an iPhone satellite crash-detection system. Due to the fly-in nature of the community, officers chartered a helicopter to reach the scene. The lone RCMP officer was dropped about 500 metres away because of darkness and rough terrain and had to hike to the wreckage. Search and rescue technicians from CFB Trenton were parachuted in to assist, providing medical support and helping stabilize the survivor until evacuation was possible. “This was an extremely challenging operation because of the remote location, darkness, and limited access,” RCMP spokespersons said in a statement, adding that the collaboration between emergency services was critical in saving the pilot’s life. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has confirmed it is gathering information about the crash to determine whether a full investigation will be launched. The cause of the accident has not yet been established. St. Theresa Point Chief and Council have not yet released a statement but community members are mourning the loss of four residents in what is being described as a devastating blow to the First Nation. In a statement on Facebook, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs sent condolences to the families of the victims, and to their community. "We grieve with you. The loss of community members in such a sudden and devastating way is felt across all our Nations. In this time of heartbreak, we stand with St. Theresa Point, holding up the families and community in prayer, love, and strength," the post said. Authorities said updates will be provided as more information becomes available regarding the cause of the crash and the identities of those killed.

According to the Associated Press, the twin‑engine Beechcraft King Air 300, operated by Albuquerque‑based CSI Aviation, had been dispatched to Chinle to pick up a critically ill patient from the Indian Health Service hospital. It went down at about 12:40 p.m. local time on August  5 while on approach and caught fire on impact, leaving the aircraft completely destroyed. Emergency crews from the Navajo Nation police and fire departments quickly responded to the scene, securing the crash site and temporarily closing Chinle Municipal Airport. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have begun investigating the crash. Officials said the investigation will examine flight data, maintenance logs, weather conditions, and crew qualifications to determine the cause of the accident. CSI Aviation confirmed to AZ Family that the aircraft was carrying two pilots and two healthcare providers at the time of the crash. There were no survivors. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of their families. It also issued a statement cited by People magazine, saying, “We are heartbroken by the loss of our colleagues and partners in medical service and extend our deepest sympathies to their families.” Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren expressed condolences following the tragedy, describing it as “a devastating loss for our Nation and for the families of those who dedicated their lives to helping others,”. He highlighted the crucial role medical flights play in remote tribal communities, where air transport often serves as a lifeline for critically ill patients. No patient was on board at the time of the incident. The aircraft had been dispatched to transport a critical patient to a higher‑level medical facility. She was 44. Nguyen, who in 2024 became only the tenth woman to circumnavigate the globe solo and the first of Vietnamese descent to achieve the feat, was attempting to recreate her historic flight when her single‑engine Lancair IV‑P went down shortly after takeoff from Indy South Greenwood Airport. The crash occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m., moments after the aircraft lifted off on a planned leg toward Pennsylvania. Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft bank sharply before spiraling down behind a Circle K gas station along Main Street. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The aircraft involved was a 2005 Lancair IV‑P, a high‑performance kit‑built plane known for its speed and efficiency. Investigators have not yet determined whether mechanical issues, environmental factors or pilot workload contributed to the crash. A preliminary report is expected within two weeks. Nguyen was more than an accomplished pilot. A Boeing 767 commercial aviator, flight instructor and chief pilot at Dragon Flight Training Academy in Florida, she also held a doctorate in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech. In 2018, she founded Asian Women in Aerospace & Aviation, a nonprofit dedicated to mentoring and empowering Asian women pursuing careers in aviation and related STEM fields. Before Wednesday’s flight, Nguyen posted a video message from the cockpit expressing excitement about repeating her world‑spanning journey, this time as part of a public outreach mission. “Hi everyone, I’m super excited today; I just completed the first leg of my solo flight around the world. This is more than just a flight, it's a mission to inspire the next generation of Asian female pilots, aerospace engineers and STEM professionals. Wish me luck, let's keep flying forward together,” she said. Asian Women in Aerospace & Aviation said in a statement that Nguyen “was an inspiring pilot, instructor and advocate for girls and women in aerospace and aviation.
