New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of ₹20 lakh on IndiGo, India’s largest airline, for alleged lapses in its pilot training programme. The regulator found that the airline had used unqualified flight simulators to train pilots operating flights to Category C aerodromes, which are considered challenging due to terrain and approach conditions. According to the filing, the alleged non-compliance relates to the airline’s “failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes.” These airports include Calicut, Mangaluru, Srinagar, Port Blair, Leh, Aizawl, Shimla, and international locations such as Kabul and Kathmandu. Aviation experts said that Category C airports require pilots to undergo specific simulator training replicating the topography and terrain of those airfields. “A qualified simulator must realistically depict the local geography, altitude, and approach pattern. Using a generic simulator can affect pilot readiness for critical airports like Leh or Calicut,” said Captain Anil S. Rao, President of the All India Pilots Association, in comments to The New Indian Express. In its statement, IndiGo said the fine would have no material impact on its operations and that it would contest the DGCA order before the appropriate appellate authority. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest training standards and operational safety,” the airline said. The DGCA’s order, dated September 26, 2025, stated that IndiGo failed to comply with simulator certification standards while conducting recurrent training for pilots assigned to operate at high-risk airports. The penalty was disclosed by IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, in its filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The DGCA had earlier issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo on August 11, 2025, for using unapproved Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators in pilot training. These simulators were reportedly used for critical training functions such as type rating, recurrent training, and proficiency checks without securing the necessary regulatory approval. The DGCA gave IndiGo seven days to respond, warning that failure to do so could have led to enforcement actions, including potential suspension of related training approvals. IndiGo acknowledged the notice and temporarily withdrew the identified simulators pending regulatory clearance. The airline cooperated with the DGCA to ensure all training devices met the required standards.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Emirates Airline has announced a significant update to its in-flight safety regulations, prohibiting passengers from using power banks to charge electronic devices onboard all flights, effective since October 1, 2025. The move comes after a safety review following growing concerns over lithium-ion battery incidents in aviation. The airline has outlined specific guidelines to ensure compliance and passenger safety: Prohibited Usage: Passengers are not allowed to use any power bank to charge devices during flights. Carry-On Allowance: Travelers may carry one power bank per person with a capacity under 100 watt-hours (Wh). Charging Restrictions: Power banks cannot be recharged using aircraft power outlets. Storage Guidelines: Power banks must be stored in the seat pocket or under the seat, and are not permitted in overhead compartments. Checked Baggage: Power banks remain strictly prohibited in checked luggage. Emirates confirmed that in-seat charging ports remain available on all aircraft. Passengers are advised to fully charge their devices prior to departure, especially on long-haul flights. Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in power banks, have been linked to thermal runaway incidents, where batteries can overheat or catch fire if damaged, overcharged, or improperly handled. Although such events are rare, Emirates cited passenger safety as the primary reason for the new restriction. Emirates’ decision aligns with a global trend in the aviation industry toward stricter regulations on portable lithium-ion batteries. International authorities, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and several airlines worldwide have introduced similar measures to mitigate potential fire risks onboard aircraft. Passengers are advised to check their devices and power banks before travel, ensure compliance with the airline’s capacity limits, and carry only one approved power bank per person. Airline staff will enforce the new guidelines at check-in and boarding points.

Chennai, India: An Air India flight Airbus 320 operating from Colombo to Chennai was forced to undergo a post-landing inspection on Tuesday after a suspected bird strike during its approach. The Airbus aircraft, carrying 158 passengers, landed safely at Chennai International Airport with no reported injuries. The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo. Air India, in a statement, said that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

California, United States: A medical helicopter operated by REACH Air Medical Services crashed onto the eastbound lanes of Highway 50 in Sacramento on Monday afternoon, leaving three crew members critically injured and shutting down a major section of the freeway. The chopper, identified as a medical transport aircraft, went down shortly after 7 p.m. local time near 65th Street, moments after departing from UC Davis Medical Center. Authorities confirmed that no patient was on board at the time of the crash. The helicopter was carrying a pilot, flight nurse, and paramedic, all of whom sustained severe injuries. Emergency personnel and bystanders assisted in the rescue, with reports indicating that one crew member was pinned under the wreckage before being freed and transported to a nearby hospital. “There were no patients or other vehicles involved in the crash,” REACH Air Medical Services said in a brief statement. “Our primary focus is on the well-being of our crew and their families.” The aircraft did not catch fire after impact, but debris was scattered across multiple lanes, forcing the closure of all eastbound lanes on Highway 50 for several hours. Westbound lanes also experienced significant slowdowns as emergency crews worked through the night to secure the site. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation to determine the cause of the crash. The helicopter appeared to lose altitude rapidly before hitting the roadway, but officials have not confirmed any mechanical failure. Highway 50 eastbound lanes were expected to reopen by early Tuesday afternoon after debris removal and structural assessments of the affected area.

Washington, United States: As the U.S. government entered a partial shutdown at midnight on October 1, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced plans to furlough over 11,000 employees, approximately one-quarter of its workforce due to a lapse in federal funding. This move follows the Department of Transportation's notification that such furloughs would be necessary if the shutdown persisted. Despite the furloughs, more than 13,000 air traffic controllers are required to continue working without pay to maintain air traffic operations. The FAA is also proceeding with hiring and training new controllers, a departure from practices during previous shutdowns. The agency remains approximately 3,800 controllers short of its staffing targets. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has stated that about 25% of its 400 employees would be furloughed. However, the NTSB will continue to launch new investigations into air accidents and other incidents during the shutdown. Meanwhile, about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff working airport security checkpoints would also continue working without pay. During the 35-day shutdown in 2019, absences among controllers and TSA officers increased as paychecks were missed, leading to longer checkpoint wait times and slowed air traffic in cities such as New York, which put pressure on lawmakers to resolve the funding impasse. Airline trade group, Airlines for America, representing carriers including United, Delta, American, and Southwest, warned that a lapse in funding could force the system to slow down, reducing efficiency and affecting travelers. The U.S. Travel Association, which represents airlines, hotels, car rental companies, and other travel businesses, estimated that even a partial shutdown could cost the U.S. travel sector approximately $1 billion per week. The FAA employs around 45,000 people, and the Transportation Department as a whole would furlough 12,200 of its 53,717 employees, including those at the FAA. The agency confirmed that essential certification activities covering commercial airplanes and engines, as well as commercial space launches would continue to ensure operational safety.

New Delhi, India: An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating flight AI117 from Amritsar to Birmingham experienced an uncommanded deployment of its Ram Air Turbine (RAT) during final approach on October 4, raising fresh concerns over the safety of the carrier’s widebody fleet. The aircraft, registered VT-ANO, landed safely in Birmingham, though its return service to Delhi was cancelled and the jet was grounded for detailed inspections. India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has launched a probe into the incident. According to officials, all electrical and hydraulic systems remained stable despite the RAT deployment. Routine maintenance checks recommended by Boeing were performed on the aircraft, and no discrepancies were reported. The DGCA has stated that the jet will be cleared to return to service only after thorough inspections are completed. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) President G S Randhawa has formally written to the DGCA, warning that limiting post-crash inspections to fuel control switches is insufficient. Instead, the group has urged regulators to expand checks to the electrical systems of all Boeing 787 aircraft in India. The FIP highlighted that the aircraft’s Aircraft Health Monitoring (AHM) system flagged a fault in the Bus Power Control Unit (BPCU), which manages the electrical power distribution and may have triggered the RAT deployment. The union stressed that this mirrors deeper systemic issues rather than isolated switch malfunctions.

New Delhi, India: ICRA has revised its domestic air passenger growth projection for FY26 to 4–6%, down from the previous estimate of 7–10%. This adjustment follows a modest 0.3% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic to 13.17 million in August 2025. The revised forecast anticipates a total of 172–176 million domestic passengers for the fiscal year, compared to 165.4 million in FY25. International air traffic growth estimates have also been reduced to 13–15% for FY26, from the earlier projection of 15–20%. Factors contributing to this downgrade include geopolitical tensions affecting flight operations, decreased travel confidence following a recent aircraft accident, and global trade challenges such as the impact of U.S. tariffs. Consequently, ICRA projects the aviation sector's net losses to widen to ₹9,500–10,500 crore in FY26, up from ₹5,500 crore in FY25. This increase is attributed to slower passenger growth amid rising aircraft deliveries and operational hurdles. Industry capacity also declined, with capacity deployment in August 2025 dropping 5.8% compared to the same month last year. Supply chain disruptions and engine issues, particularly involving Pratt & Whitney engines, have led to approximately 133 aircraft being grounded as of March 31, 2025, accounting for 15–17% of the total industry fleet. Despite a decrease in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, cost pressures persist due to the dollar-denominated nature of key operating expenses, including fuel, aircraft leases, and maintenance. These factors continue to impact airlines' profitability. ICRA notes that while some carriers benefit from strong parental support and adequate liquidity, others may face challenges in maintaining credit metrics and liquidity profiles in the near term.
