Airport-wise data showed that Mumbai alone accounted for 86 cancellations, Bengaluru saw 73, and Delhi recorded over 30 cancellations, highlighting the scale of network-wide disruption at India’s busiest aviation hubs. The flight cancellations followed a dramatic collapse in punctuality earlier in the week. On Wednesday, December 3, IndiGo’s on-time performance (OTP) plunged to just 19.7%, its lowest level in years. This marked a steep fall from 35% recorded a day earlier, indicating a rapid deterioration in schedule reliability. With fewer than one in five flights operating on time, IndiGo, once regarded as India’s most punctual airline, saw its reputation for schedule discipline severely eroded within 48 hours. For Thursday, December 4, sustained cancellations, rolling delays and aircraft rotation failures across multiple cities throughout the day indicated that punctuality remained under acute pressure. The crisis has been triggered primarily by an acute shortage of available pilots following the implementation of stricter crew duty and rest regulations. IndiGo underestimated the number of additional pilots required to sustain its high-frequency schedule under the new regulatory framework. As a result, the airline was left with little buffer once the stricter rest rules became enforceable. Once the first wave of cancellations began, the crisis escalated rapidly through cascading operational failures, including aircraft misplacement, delayed crew handovers, disrupted maintenance windows, and congestion at high-density airports. These knock-on effects compounded recovery efforts and caused rolling delays across multiple flight banks through the day. The underlying trigger for the disruption lies in the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms introduced by the DGCA, aimed at strengthening aviation safety by reducing fatigue-related risks for pilots. The second and most stringent phase of these rules came into force on November 1, 2025. Under the revised framework, pilots are mandated to receive 48 consecutive hours of weekly rest, face tighter limits on consecutive night duties, and are subject to caps on night landings and duty extensions. While the industry had advance notice of the regulatory changes, IndiGo’s internal staffing preparedness appears to have fallen short. Officials said the airline had operated with a very thin standby crew margin even before the new norms were enforced, leaving it vulnerable to large-scale disruption once pilot availability dropped. With passenger inconvenience mounting and network stability deteriorating, the DGCA has now stepped in to closely supervise IndiGo’s recovery plan. The regulator has directed the airline to submit a detailed mitigation strategy covering crew hiring, training schedules and revised rostering practices. DGCA is planning to grant IndiGo a temporary, conditional waiver from certain pilot rest provisions to arrest further operational collapse. The proposed relief is expected to be short-term and tightly monitored, with compliance milestones linked to crew augmentation and scheduling corrections. The regulator has made it clear that safety standards will not be permanently diluted and that any relaxation will be transitional. IndiGo has informed authorities that it expects phased stabilisation of its network by February 10, 2026, subject to successful induction of additional crew and progressive restoration of flight rotations. The disruption at IndiGo which operates over 2,000 flights daily and carries more than half of India’s domestic air passengers has sent ripples through the aviation sector. While the FDTL norms are widely seen as a necessary safety reform, the crisis has exposed the operational vulnerability of airlines that expand capacity faster than manpower buffers. For passengers, uncertainty is likely to continue in the near term. Aviation officials have advised travellers to monitor flight status closely and exercise refund and rebooking rights in the event of cancellations as IndiGo works to stabilise its schedule.

As per IndiGo's website, the airline operates well over 2,200 daily flights. Government data from Wednesday shows the airline’s on-time performance plunging to just 19.7%, a dramatic fall for a carrier long associated with punctuality. This implies that over 1,767 flights were delayed on that day alone. The turbulence continued and on Wednesday airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad collectively reported 200 flight cancellations by afternoon, in addition to hundreds of delayed departures and arrivals. The combined impact of delays and cancellations caused widespread disruption for domestic travellers, leaving passengers stranded, scrambling for alternatives, and highlighting the operational strain on the airline’s network. In addition to crew constraints, airport congestion, winter fog disruptions in north India, and internal operational realignments further compounded the stress on the airline’s network, according to aviation sources. The disruption led to multiple delays stretching into several hours, and in many cases, short-notice cancellations, forcing passengers to look for alternative routes or remain stranded at airports. Cape Town, Antarctica: Portuguese charter airline Hi Fly has successfully completed the world’s first Airbus A330 landing on an Antarctic ice runway, marking a major milestone in the evolution of polar aviation. The aircraft touched down at Wolf’s Fang Runway in Queen Maud Land after departing from Cape Town, South Africa. The historic flight was operated using an Airbus A330-302 registered as 9H-HFI and was commanded by Hi Fly Vice-Chairman Captain Carlos Mirpuri, who has previously led several pioneering polar operations for the airline. The mission was conducted on behalf of luxury expedition operator White Desert Antarctica as part of the 2025–26 Antarctic summer season. Wolf’s Fang Runway is a blue-ice airstrip carved out of glacial ice and used for logistics, scientific operations and high-end tourism. In November 2021, Hi Fly made global aviation history by becoming the first airline to land a widebody commercial jet on an Antarctic ice runway. The aircraft used was an Airbus A340-300, which touched down on the blue-ice Wolf’s Fang Runway in the interior of Antarctica. The deployment of the A330 was made possible following recent upgrades to ground-handling and runway-support infrastructure at Wolf’s Fang. These improvements now allow safe operations of modern twin-engine widebody aircraft in one of the world’s most challenging aviation environments. The shift from the four-engine A340 to the twin-engine A330 also brings significant environmental and efficiency benefits. The A330 offers lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions and improved operating economics, aligning with growing sustainability expectations for Antarctic operations. Aviation analysts say the successful A330 landing sets a new benchmark for polar operations and opens the door for broader use of modern, fuel-efficient aircraft for both tourism and scientific logistics in Antarctica. With expanding infrastructure and proven aircraft capability, operators could increasingly rely on twin-engine widebodies for future missions. While Russian cargo jets and military aircraft had operated on Antarctic ice runways earlier, Hi Fly became the first commercial airline to land a widebody passenger jet on Wolf’s Fang Runway in Antarctica’s interior in 2021, followed by the world’s first Airbus A330 ice-runway landing in 2025. For White Desert Antarctica, the milestone strengthens its ability to transport guests, researchers and critical supplies to one of the most remote locations on Earth with improved capacity and lower environmental impact.

Under the new partnership, Virgin Australia plans to leverage OpenAI’s developer tools (including the recently announced Apps SDK) to embed its flight-search and travel-planning capabilities within ChatGPT. This means that users will soon be able to describe their travel needs in natural language, for example, “Find me flights from Melbourne to Bali in March with return after two weeks” and receive tailored flight options from Virgin Australia’s real-time inventory. Virgin says the new integration is part of its broader ambition to create a more personalised, convenient and connected travel experience. Beijing, China: Air China and Rolls-Royce have completed their USD 315 million engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Beijing, marking a major expansion of Rolls-Royce’s service network in mainland China. The joint venture, Beijing Aero Engine Services Ltd (BAESL), will induct its first engine in December 2025, with full commercial operations scheduled for early 2026. The Beijing site will overhaul Trent 700, Trent XWB-84, and Trent 1000 engines, which power A330, A350 and Boeing 787 fleets operated by Chinese carriers. Rolls-Royce said BAESL is designed as a “digitally enabled, next-generation” shop with advanced tooling and automation. According to official Beijing investment authorities, the facility spans more than 80,000 sq. m and will employ up to 800 staff once fully ramped up. It is expected to reach an annual capacity of 250 engine shop visits by the mid-2030s. This is Rolls-Royce’s first MRO joint venture on mainland China and its fourth globally, complementing HAESL in Hong Kong, SAESL in Singapore, and N3 in Germany. For Air China, the project strengthens domestic overhaul capability for high-thrust wide-body engines, reducing dependency on overseas shops. Air China executives said the facility will support the “industrialisation and localisation” of China’s engine maintenance ecosystem. Rolls-Royce leaders noted that China’s expanding wide-body fleet with nearly 600 Trent engines in service requires long-term, locally available maintenance capacity. BAESL is situated in Shunyi District, inside the Beijing Capital International Airport Economic Zone. Infrastructure includes overhaul bays, advanced engine testing facilities, parts warehousing and digital monitoring centres. With the JV now structurally complete, Rolls-Royce and Air China will begin progressive operational readiness checks before the first Trent engine arrives later this year. The facility is expected to significantly cut turnaround times for Chinese operators and reinforce China’s position as a major MRO hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
