Pennsylvania, United States: A New Jersey flight instructor has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with a 2022 small-plane crash in Salisbury Township, Pennsylvania, that killed his student pilot from Easton. According to federal prosecutors, 36-year-old Philip McPherson of Haddon Township, New Jersey, entered a guilty plea in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania earlier this week. The plea stems from the fatal crash that occurred just one minute after takeoff from Queen City Municipal Airport in Allentown on August 18, 2022, claiming the life of 49-year-old student pilot Keith Kozel. McPherson and Kozel were flying a single-engine Cessna 172 on an instructional flight when the aircraft lost control shortly after departure. The plane crashed into the yard of a home on South Melrose Avenue in Salisbury Township and burst into flames. Kozel died at the scene, while McPherson survived with injuries. Investigators later determined that McPherson was not legally certified to act as a flight instructor or pilot at the time of the crash. Court documents revealed he had surrendered his pilot certificate to the FAA in 2018 after being involved in two prior accidents and subsequently failed a 2021 reexamination for lack of competence. In August 2024, McPherson was indicted on one count of involuntary manslaughter and 40 counts of serving as an airman without a valid certificate, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Prosecutors argued that McPherson acted with “gross negligence” by knowingly providing flight instruction despite his disqualification, thereby endangering his student’s life. On October 14, 2025, McPherson pleaded guilty to manslaughter under a plea agreement that will see the remaining charges dismissed at sentencing, as confirmed by local authorities. He faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. McPherson’s sentencing is scheduled for January 2026 in Philadelphia. The court is expected to consider aggravating factors related to his prior record and repeated violations of federal aviation regulations. Friends and relatives of the late Keith Kozel described him as a dedicated student pilot who was “living his dream of flying.” The Kozel family has expressed relief that justice is being served but said “no sentence can bring Keith back.” The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) assisted in the investigation, which concluded that the accident resulted from pilot error and lack of qualification on the part of McPherson.

Colorado, United States: A mid-air collision between two small aircraft at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport on Sunday morning left one person dead and three others injured, officials reported. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA-300 collided while both were on final approach to land at the airport. The Morgan County Sheriff's Office received the first report of the crash at approximately 10:44 a.m. local time. Emergency crews including deputies from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, personnel from the Fort Morgan Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Fort Morgan Fire Department, and Morgan County Ambulance arrived promptly at the scene. The two occupants of the Cessna 172 sustained only minor injuries and were treated on-site. In contrast, one occupant of the EA-300 was taken to a local hospital, while the other was declared dead at the crash site by the Morgan County Coroner’s Office. Following the collision, both aircraft crashed and caught fire. A plume of smoke was visible from afar, and bystanders rushed to help extinguish the flames before first responders arrived. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation, with the NTSB expected to take the lead on determining what caused the crash. In a statement, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the victim’s family: “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic event. We would like to express our gratitude to all the agencies that helped with this situation. Additionally, we want to thank the citizens who assisted in trying to extinguish the fire until the fire department and first responders arrived on the scene.” The crash occurred during a weekend aerobatics competition at the airport involving Metropolitan State University of Denver’s collegiate aerobatics team. University officials clarified that their event was unrelated to the collision. Meanwhile, the airport has been closed temporarily as investigators and emergency teams continue their work.

The incident involved a 2011-built Socata TBM 700 turboprop, registered to Meter Sky LLC of Pullman, Washington. According to the Kalispell Fire Department, the single-engine plane was carrying four people, the pilot and three passengers when it attempted to land at around 2:00 p.m. local time. Initial reports from Kalispell Fire Chief Dan Pearson indicate that the TBM 700 touched down normally but lost directional control during rollout. The aircraft veered off the runway and collided with several parked planes on the apron. The collision ruptured fuel lines, triggering a blaze that quickly spread to the nearby grassy area adjacent to the tarmac. All four occupants managed to evacuate the aircraft before flames engulfed it. Two people suffered minor injuries and received treatment on-site, while the other two were unhurt. No injuries were reported among ground personnel. Multiple firefighting units from Kalispell and surrounding districts responded within minutes. Eyewitnesses described the crash as sudden and violent. Mark Grant, manager of the Aero Inn located near the airport, recounted to AP NEWS the moment of impact: “It was like sticking your head inside a bass drum and someone hitting it with all their might. The sound rattled the windows.” Several onlookers captured videos that circulated widely on social media, showing thick columns of black smoke rising from the airfield as emergency crews rushed to the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed it has opened a preliminary inquiry into the crash, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the formal investigation. The investigators will examine factors including runway surface conditions, aircraft mechanical integrity, and potential pilot error. The TBM 700’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders, though not required for all private planes, will be checked if installed. The NTSB’s initial report is expected within two weeks, but a final determination could take up to a year.
