The long‑haul flight, originally scheduled as SQ391 on December 12, 2025 at 1:15 pm local time, was unable to depart on three successive occasions due to a recurring technical issue identified during pre‑departure procedures. Shortly after pushback on the first departure attempt, the flight crew reported a problem with the aircraft’s flaps, a key flight control component. The aircraft returned to the gate. All 229 passengers remained on board for nearly four hours as engineers conducted inspections and attempted repairs. During this time, food and beverages were provided. Efforts to resolve the fault extended beyond the initial delay, and the airline determined that additional time was needed for technical support and parts before safe continuation of service. Subsequent departure times were announced and later revised, resulting in three failed attempts before the aircraft was finally released. Passengers recounted frustrations over the prolonged delays and changing departure times. Some criticised the clarity and frequency of updates provided by airline staff at the airport. Although meal vouchers and hotel accommodation options were offered, several travellers reported challenges covering additional incidental expenses such as medication and extra meals during their extended stay in Istanbul. In response to media queries, a Singapore Airlines spokesperson reiterated that the safety of customers and crew remained the airline’s priority throughout the disruption, and offered apologies to affected travellers. The carrier also noted that assistance was provided in rebooking connecting flights at the final destination. In a separate incident, a Singapore Airlines long‑haul flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) carrying 151 passengers was delayed for more than 48 hours after its original departure on December 14, 2025, was postponed due to adverse winter weather and a runway closure for de‑icing. The flight, originally designated SQ21, was rescheduled and renumbered as SQ9021, but was delayed again due to an airport baggage handling system fault and a technical issue with the aircraft’s nose wheel, forcing further disruptions. The rescheduled service was subsequently planned to depart on December 16 and arrive in Singapore on December 17. Singapore Airlines, consistently ranked among the world’s top carriers, has reaffirmed its commitment to safety and customer care in its ongoing response to operational disruptions. The airline continues to support affected customers, reaffirming that technical rectification and passenger welfare are core priorities during irregular operations.

Singapore: Passengers flying out of Changi Airport and Seletar Airport will soon pay a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) levy starting in 2026, as part of Singapore’s drive to reduce the aviation sector’s carbon emissions and support global decarbonisation goals. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), the levy will apply to tickets issued from April 1, 2026, for flights departing on or after October 1, 2026. The collected funds will be channelled into purchasing sustainable aviation fuel, helping airlines transition away from fossil-based jet fuel. Under the new system, passengers will pay different levy rates depending on destination zones and cabin classes: Band 1 – Southeast Asia: Economy S$1 | Premium S$4 Band 2 – Northeast Asia, South Asia, Australia & Papua New Guinea: Economy S$2.80 | Premium S$11.20 Band 3 – Africa, Europe, Middle East, Pacific Islands, Central & West Asia: Economy S$6.40 | Premium S$25.60 Band 4 – The Americas: Economy S$10.40 | Premium S$41.60 Transit passengers passing through Singapore will be exempt from the levy. The scheme will also cover cargo operators, business aviation, and general aviation flights, which will pay a SAF contribution based on aircraft weight or cargo load. CAAS stated that the initiative is a market-based mechanism designed to accelerate the uptake of SAF in a cost-effective and transparent manner. The authority said the levy would make the cost of cleaner fuel predictable for airlines and travellers while ensuring funds are ring-fenced for SAF purchases. “The SAF levy is a key part of Singapore’s decarbonisation framework for aviation. It enables us to make steady progress towards our targets while maintaining competitiveness as a global air hub,” CAAS said in a statement. Singapore’s aviation decarbonisation roadmap targets at least 1 % SAF usage by 2026, increasing to 3 %–5 % by 2030, depending on supply availability and cost developments. The levy rates could be adjusted in future as the SAF blend ratio rises. Globally, sustainable aviation fuel remains more expensive than conventional jet fuel typically costing two to five times more but is widely regarded as the most immediate tool to cut aviation’s carbon footprint. Singapore’s move follows similar measures adopted in the European Union and Japan, and could set a precedent for other Asian hubs exploring SAF mandates or incentives. The initiative complements broader efforts under the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) CORSIA framework, which aims for net-zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050. By creating a structured and transparent levy system, Singapore aims to send a clear demand signal to fuel producers and investors, potentially attracting SAF production and supply-chain projects to the region.

Singapore: The Asia-Pacific region has officially surpassed its pre-pandemic aviation capacity, marking a significant milestone in the industry’s recovery from COVID-19. According to aviation data provider OAG, total seat capacity in the region now stands 0.5% higher than in 2019, driven primarily by robust domestic markets in countries such as India, China, and Indonesia. Independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie described the rebound as “delayed but now very strong,” emphasizing that Asia-Pacific’s recovery trailed behind other global markets due to prolonged travel restrictions and uneven reopening policies. However, once borders reopened, pent-up demand for air travel surged, supported by economic resilience and a growing middle-class population. “The younger population and the expanding middle class are fundamental drivers of aviation growth in this region,” Sobie said. “These demographic factors are creating long-term, sustainable demand for air travel.” Domestic travel has been the engine behind the region’s growth. Data from OAG shows that China’s domestic capacity is 14% higher than 2019 levels, while India’s domestic seat capacity is up by 13%, reflecting the strength of internal connectivity and economic activity. Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and China Eastern are leading the growth in international seat capacity. Singapore Airlines is one of three Asia-Pacific carriers that have exceeded their 2019 international capacity, operating 14.1% more seats than in 2024. The other two are Scoot (+13.8%) and EVA Airways (+4.5%). The ticket prices across the region have dropped because of rapid capacity growth and tougher competition. Fares on 17 of the 20 fastest-growing routes have fallen by over 20%, with Bangkok–Shanghai (BKK–PVG) seeing the steepest decline of 71% year-on-year. Even as international capacity continues to recover more gradually, the rapid expansion of domestic networks has allowed airlines to stabilize operations and rebuild financial strength. The recovery is also being shaped by rapid technological transformation across airlines and airports. In Singapore, Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has embraced digital solutions to improve operational efficiency. The airline’s virtual Operations Command Center (OCC), developed in partnership with OutSystems, enables real-time monitoring of flight operations and proactive disruption management. According to Leonard Tan, Regional Vice President at OutSystems, the system has improved data visibility by 90% and reduced manual processing by 60%, allowing Scoot to respond faster to operational challenges. “By digitizing core operational workflows, airlines can make better decisions, reduce costs, and enhance passenger experience,” Tan explained. The Asia-Pacific region’s aviation growth is now outpacing global averages, reflecting both market resilience and structural shifts toward efficiency. As emerging economies expand and infrastructure improves, analysts expect further growth in capacity and connectivity across the region.
