Seattle, United States: Alaska Airlines is confronting one of the most significant staffing disruptions in its recent history as an unusually large number of flight attendants call in sick amid a surge in respiratory illness across the United States. Internal communications reviewed by industry observers show that more than 540 Alaska Airlines flight attendants were absent due to illness over a recent weekend, marking what the carrier described as an all-time high in sick calls. The volume of absences has strained crew reserves and forced the airline to adopt contingency measures to maintain scheduled operations. The spike in sick calls has resulted in flight delays and a modest number of cancellations as the airline works to reposition staff and preserve its network integrity. On the worst-affected days last weekend, Alaska Airlines cancelled more than 30 flights per day while delays affected an estimated 37 % of its schedule according to flight-tracking services. While the carrier has largely avoided widespread cancellations so far, sources note that scheduling teams are prioritising high-density routes and strategic departures to prevent disruptions from cascading across subsequent days. Alaska Airlines is not alone. Other major U.S. carriers, including JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and Frontier, have reported elevated levels of crew absences that have necessitated activation of emergency contingency staffing plans. In several cases, airlines have required medical documentation for sick leave or offered enhanced pay incentives to crew willing to fill gaps. Spirit Airlines, for example, saw cancellations approach double-digit percentages of its scheduled flights earlier in the year as staffing shortages compounded operational challenges. The surge in sick calls corresponds with broader public health data showing elevated rates of influenza and other respiratory viruses circulating this winter. Public health officials in the U.S. have recently reported higher-than-normal seasonal respiratory illness activity, a trend that has affected multiple sectors reliant on workforce availability. While Alaska Airlines has not publicly attributed specific causes to the absences, insiders characterize the rise in call-outs as linked to the broader seasonal spike in illness. To mitigate disruption, Alaska Airlines has offered incentives to flight attendants on days off to volunteer for additional trips and has adjusted scheduling practices to keep services running. Officials are also encouraging passengers to monitor flight status closely and consider travel insurance where appropriate. New Delhi, India: India’s aviation industry is bracing for a difficult FY2026, with ICRA estimating sector-wide losses to climb to Rs 95–105 billion, almost double the Rs 55 billion loss expected in FY2025. Softening passenger growth, upcoming fleet inductions and ongoing global and domestic disruptions are set to pressure financial performance. Even so, ICRA has maintained a stable outlook for the year, supported by steady travel demand, though influenced by cross-border tensions, accident-related caution and tariff-linked challenges on the commercial side. Domestic passenger traffic in October 2025 reached 142.8 lakh, up 4.5% from October 2024 and 12.9% higher than September 2025. Capacity deployment grew 1.7% year-on-year to 99,816 departures, with passenger load factor rising to 84.7%, compared with 82.4% a year earlier. For April–October 2025, domestic traffic stood at 944.5 lakh, a 1.6% year-on-year increase. ICRA expects full-year FY2026 domestic travel to grow 4–6%, reaching 172–176 million passengers. International traffic carried by Indian airlines rose 5.8% year-on-year in September 2025, touching 28.3 lakh, though sequentially down by 5.7%. In H1 FY2026, international traffic reached 175.6 lakh, marking 9.1% growth. ICRA projects further expansion of 13–15% in FY2026. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) remains a key cost concern. ATF prices in November 2025 were 4.4% higher year-on-year and 0.8% higher month-on-month. FY2025 had seen average ATF prices fall to Rs 95,181 per KL, about 8% lower year-on-year, but recent months have reversed that relief. Fuel constitutes 30–40% of airline operating expenses, while 35–50% of major costs are dollar-linked. The rupee’s depreciation in Q2 FY2026 led to notable forex losses for several carriers, though most remain unrealised. Fleet shortages persist. Pratt & Whitney engine problems and broader supply-chain delays resulted in around 133 aircraft being grounded across various airlines by March 2025, representing 15–17% of total industry capacity. IndiGo had 70 aircraft grounded in March 2024 due to powder-metal contamination, which reduced to about 40 by September 2025. Go Airlines, hit by similar issues, eventually grounded half its fleet in FY2024 and suspended operations. These constraints have increased operating costs through replacement leases, poorer fuel efficiency and higher spot-rental rates. Despite strong PLFs and firmer yields, profitability remains limited. The industry’s interest coverage ratio is expected to remain at 1.5–1.7 times for FY2026. Large carriers benefit from parent backing, while others continue to face liquidity stress and stretched balance sheets. The DGCA has proposed new passenger-centric norms allowing customers to cancel or modify tickets within 48 hours of booking without charges, provided the travel date is beyond five days (domestic) or fifteen days (international). Refunds are to be processed within 21 working days.

The unexpected shutdown has left roughly 1,750 passengers stranded at destinations across Europe and North America. The airline cited ongoing financial difficulties, declining ticket sales, and internal operational challenges as the main reasons behind the abrupt closure. Around 500 employees have lost their jobs due to the closure, including pilots, cabin crew, and administrative staff. Play Airlines has stated that it is working to provide guidance and support to its workforce during the transition. Founded in 2019 by former executives of WOW Air and Primera Air, Play Airlines launched operations in 2021 with the goal of offering affordable transatlantic flights connecting Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport with European and North American cities. While the airline initially gained traction among price-sensitive travelers, it struggled to maintain profitability amid intense competition and rising operational costs. Until Monday morning, Play Airlines operated flights to several European cities such as London Stansted, Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Alicante, and Faro. The final flight from Reykjavik to Stansted landed on time at 10:40 a.m. on Monday. However, the aircraft remains at the airport, and the scheduled return flight to Reykjavik has been cancelled. PLAY Airlines’ shutdown was driven by mounting financial losses that proved unsustainable. At the end of the previous year, the airline reported a loss of $66 million (£49 million), which amounted to roughly £31 per passenger. Although the airline’s most recent financial results in August 2025 projected that profitability might begin in 2026, these expectations never materialized. Aviation analyst Sean Moulton noted that PLAY attempted to replicate WOW Air’s model, linking secondary European cities with the U.S., but faced a limited market and low yields. Even after shifting strategy to focus on point-to-point leisure destinations, the small Icelandic population made it difficult for the airline to succeed independently. The sudden suspension has caused significant disruption for passengers, many of whom are currently stranded abroad. Travelers are advised to contact their credit card providers, travel agencies, or flight insurers for refunds. In addition, some carriers may provide “rescue fares” for affected travelers seeking alternative routes. Play Airlines collapse due to the ongoing challenges faced by low-cost carriers, particularly in the transatlantic market. Iceland has seen multiple budget carriers struggle in recent years, reflecting the volatility and financial pressures inherent in the aviation sector. Rising fuel costs, labor disputes, and competition from larger carriers have made it especially challenging for smaller airlines in the region to remain profitable.
