Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia is preparing to launch three new airlines, a significant expansion of its aviation ecosystem as the kingdom accelerates its Vision 2030 strategy to boost tourism, improve connectivity and transform into a global aviation hub. Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority, confirmed the plan, saying the new carriers will complement the existing network led by Saudia, Riyadh Air, flynas and flyadeal. “A successful national airline builds a destination, Riyadh Air, Saudia and three more air carriers to be announced,” he said. The first of the three new carriers will be a low-cost airline based at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. The airline will be operated by a consortium comprising Air Arabia, Nesma Group, and KUN Holding, after the group won the government tender earlier this year. According to public disclosures, the new LCC plans to operate 45 aircraft by 2030, fly 24 domestic and 57 international routes, and handle around 10 million passengers annually. It is also expected to generate approximately 2,400 direct jobs once fully operational. These developments align with Saudi Arabia’s push to decentralize aviation capacity beyond Jeddah and Riyadh, strengthening the Eastern Province as a competitive hub for both domestic and regional travel. A second airline will be established in Medina, focused on serving the booming religious tourism sector. The carrier is expected to support Hajj and Umrah operations by providing direct international connectivity to the holy city, reducing pressure on Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport. Government officials indicated that tenders for the Medina-based airline are expected within months, signaling that planning is already in advanced stages. The third airline remains undisclosed, with no public confirmation on whether it will be a full-service, hybrid or low-cost carrier. Industry observers say the airline could target underserved regional markets or support long-haul connectivity as Saudi Arabia expands its inbound tourism targets. Saudi Arabia handled 128 million passengers in 2024, a double-digit increase that has reinforced the need for expanded airline capacity and airport infrastructure. The kingdom has committed $100 billion to overhaul and modernize its aviation sector, including airport development, new carriers, digital transformation and long-term fleet investments. Riyadh Air is scheduled to launch international operations in 2025, while Saudia Group is expanding through flyadeal’s recent order of 10 Airbus A330neo aircraft, signaling the nation’s broader shift toward becoming a top global aviation market. The launch of three new airlines represents one of the most aggressive aviation expansions currently underway globally, positioning Saudi Arabia to handle its revised tourism target of 150 million annual visitors by 2030.

The airline said the move marks a major milestone in its ongoing digital overhaul aimed at streamlining airport processes, cutting costs and reducing paper waste. The shift was originally scheduled for 3 November but was pushed to 12 November to avoid peak mid-term travel. From now on, passengers checking in for any Ryanair flight must use the myRyanair mobile app, which generates the only accepted boarding pass format. Ryanair said the first day of the rollout was “a huge success,” with more than 700 flights departing by mid-day and over 98% of passengers using digital passes without issues. The remaining 2%, mostly travellers unable to load the app, were issued printed passes at airport desks free of charge, provided they had already checked in online. CMO Dara Brady said customer feedback was “universally positive” and the digital system helped speed up security and boarding processes. Ryanair confirmed that printed boarding passes will no longer be accepted at any airport unless local regulations require them. Exemptions remain in specific markets such as Morocco, Tirana (Albania) until March 2026. Passengers who lose phone access after checking in due to battery failure or device issues will receive a printed pass at the airport at no additional charge. The airline says the digital switch will eliminate over 300 tonnes of paper annually, while nearly 80% of its 200 million passengers were already using digital boarding passes. Ryanair also expects the move to help phase out most airport check-in fees. The myRyanair app now centralizes travel documents and offers new features including “Order to Seat” food and beverage delivery, live gate and delay alerts, and real-time disruption updates. The shift has drawn criticism from consumer rights groups and EU lawmakers. Concerns include digital exclusion for passengers without smartphones, potential data privacy implications, and disruptions if app or device malfunctions occur. Technology analysts also noted that the move effectively forces passengers to download the Ryanair app, increasing dependency on the platform.

The initiative, part of BA’s £7-billion transformation programme, promises “lightning-fast, reliable WiFi that feels like home” for every passenger in every cabin, according to the airline’s official announcement. The rollout will extend to both short-haul and long-haul aircraft, enabling gate-to-gate connectivity without usage charges or tier-based plans. The move positions British Airways among the first major global carriers to adopt Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite network at scale. These satellites offer significantly lower latency and stronger performance compared with conventional aviation WiFi systems, aiming to remove the long-standing frustration of slow or unreliable inflight internet. Media reports indicate that parts of the fleet may begin receiving installations as early as late 2025, with full deployment progressing through 2026. However, the airline has not disclosed the exact sequence of aircraft types or routes that will receive the system first. Parent company International Airlines Group (IAG) is also expected to expand Starlink connectivity across its other carriers, including Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling, signalling a group-wide shift toward high-performance digital services. BA’s adoption of Starlink comes amid increasing competition in the European market, where carriers are upgrading cabins, lounges and digital platforms to meet evolving customer expectations. Analysts say free, fast internet could become a new industry standard, particularly on short-haul routes where in-flight connectivity has lagged behind long-haul offerings. While British Airways describes the service as completely free for passengers, it has not clarified whether any data caps, device limitations or route-specific restrictions will apply once the network enters full service.

Istanbul, Turkey: Turkish Airlines (THY) announced on September 26, 2025, a landmark fleet expansion, planning to acquire up to 225 Boeing aircraft in a deal worth billions of dollars. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to operate an entirely new-generation fleet by 2035. The airline’s board has approved the purchase of 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including 50 firm orders and 25 options for the B787-9 and B787-10 models. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2034, according to a statement filed with Istanbul's Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). Turkish Airlines is also negotiating with Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace for engines, spare parts, and maintenance services for the 787 fleet. Additionally, the airline has finalized discussions with Boeing for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, 100 firm orders and 50 options covering the 737-8 and 737-10 MAX variants. These 737 MAX orders are contingent upon completing engine agreements with CFM International. “Through these acquisitions, our fleet will consist entirely of new-generation aircraft by 2035, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting an estimated 6% annual growth rate,” the airline said. This announcement closely followed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where discussions included energy policies and potential easing of U.S. sanctions to facilitate F-35 fighter jet purchases. “Negotiations with Boeing have been successfully concluded, supporting our strategy to rank among the world’s top five airlines with a fleet of 813 aircraft by 2033. Our nation’s pride, Turkish Airlines, is confidently advancing toward this goal,” said Bilal Ekşi, CEO of Turkish Airlines. The new aircraft will replace older models, improve fuel efficiency, enhance passenger comfort, and support the airline’s sustainability objectives.
