New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has grounded an Air India Airbus A320 aircraft and launched a formal investigation after it was found to have operated eight commercial flights without a valid Airworthiness Review Certificate (ARC). The lapse was discovered during a routine night‑halt inspection by an engineer, who noticed the aircraft’s ARC had expired. The certificate is mandatory to ensure the aircraft meets maintenance and safety standards before any flight. DGCA officials confirmed the aircraft had flown eight “revenue sectors” on 24–25 November 2025, despite the absence of a valid ARC. Flying without this certificate is considered a serious compliance violation as it directly pertains to flight safety. Following the discovery, DGCA immediately grounded the aircraft and suspended all personnel responsible for approving its release to service pending the outcome of the investigation. The regulator has also instructed Air India to conduct an internal compliance audit to identify systemic gaps and prevent future lapses. In a statement, Air India acknowledged the incident, calling it “regrettable.” The airline said it self-reported the breach to DGCA, suspended the staff involved, and initiated its own internal investigation. It reaffirmed its commitment to strict safety and regulatory compliance. Operating an aircraft without a valid airworthiness certificate poses significant safety risks and could potentially impact insurance coverage for the aircraft, including hull, liability, and passenger insurance. It has been described as a Level‑1 violation, the most serious type of compliance failure concerning aircraft safety standards. The aircraft was part of the former Vistara fleet, which merged with Air India in late 2024. After the merger, DGCA renewed ARCs for 69 of 70 aircraft. The 70th aircraft, which later operated eight sectors, had undergone an engine change, during which its ARC expired. Despite this, it was mistakenly released into service. DGCA’s inquiry will determine whether penalties, fines, or further actions against responsible personnel are warranted. Air India’s internal investigation will also examine systemic compliance gaps and recommend measures to prevent recurrence.

The recall directive affects roughly 6,000 aircraft, representing over half of the A320 fleet currently in operation, making it one of the most extensive fleet actions in recent aviation history. The action was prompted by an incident involving a JetBlue A320 on 30 October 2025, during which the aircraft experienced a sudden, uncommanded drop in altitude, forcing the crew to perform an emergency landing. While the flight landed safely, several passengers sustained minor injuries, and the event triggered an immediate investigation by Airbus and aviation safety authorities. Investigators concluded that intense solar radiation may have temporarily corrupted critical avionics data, affecting the aircraft’s flight-control systems. Importantly, the issue is software-related rather than structural, but it exposed vulnerabilities in the aircraft’s data-handling and flight-control architecture under extreme environmental conditions. In response, Airbus has mandated all operators apply a critical software update that reverts the flight-control systems to a proven, stable configuration. For most aircraft, the update can be performed within a few hours and the jets can return to service immediately. However, some older or heavily affected aircraft require hardware replacements to fully resolve the issue, which could keep them grounded for several days. The recall has already disrupted flight schedules worldwide, as airlines scramble to comply with the directive. Major operators, including IndiGo, Air India, American Airlines, Jetstar, and other carriers in Europe and Asia, have issued warnings of potential delays, cancellations, and rescheduling, especially for flights operated with A320-family aircraft. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), along with national aviation regulators, is closely monitoring compliance and providing guidance to ensure safety standards are maintained. Airbus has emphasized that passenger safety remains its highest priority and has pledged full cooperation with airlines to minimize operational disruption. Passengers flying on affected aircraft are advised to check directly with their airlines for updates. Airlines have indicated that most A320s will resume service within days, although some delays are expected to persist in the short term, particularly in regions with a high density of A320 operations. The Airbus A320 family, widely regarded as the backbone of short- and medium-haul commercial aviation, continues to operate safely in most circumstances. However, this recall represents a rare but significant safety precaution, emphasizing the need for continuous vigilance, maintenance, and software management in the era of highly automated aircraft.

Nadi, Fiji: Fiji Airways is losing millions of dollars every year because of bird strikes, which are happening more often and causing serious aircraft damage. The government is now taking new steps to reduce the problem around airports. Deputy Prime Minister and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka told Parliament that the airline reported 41 bird strike cases in 2024, compared with 33 in 2023 and 24 in 2022. Four Boeing 737 aircraft were grounded last year after bird strikes, costing the airline about US $19.2 million, while another engine incident this year caused an extra US $4.8 million loss. A major incident took place on October 9, 2025, when Fiji Airways flight FJ450 from Christchurch to Nadi hit a flock of pigeons during take-off. The impact damaged the aircraft’s nose, wings, and both engines. The pilots safely returned to Christchurch Airport. Industry data shows that bird strikes have already cost Fiji Airways more than US $8.4 million in 2024 alone. These costs include repairs, grounded aircraft, and flight delays. Fiji Airports has started a Wildlife Hazard Management Program to stop birds from gathering near runways. This includes mapping bird habitats within five kilometres of airports, using bird deterrent systems, and training airport staff to handle wildlife safely. A new National Wildlife Hazard Management Committee has also been set up to bring together airport operators, environment officials, and local governments. The committee will coordinate actions to reduce bird strike risks across the country. Minister Gavoka said poor waste management, open drains, and fruit trees near airports attract birds. He urged local councils to improve waste control and restrict land use that encourages bird activity. “Safety is our top priority,” Gavoka told Parliament. “We must protect our people and our aircraft from unnecessary danger.” Experts say Fiji’s geography makes bird strikes harder to prevent, as many airports are close to the coast and farmland. Open garbage areas and food waste around Nadi and Nausori airports also draw more birds. Bird strikes usually happen during take-off or landing, when planes are flying low. Even small birds can cause major damage if they hit engines or wings. Authorities are now looking at advanced tools such as bird-detection radar, sound-based deterrents, and public education programs to reduce the risk. Communities living near airports will be asked to help by keeping waste areas clean and avoiding bird feeding near flight paths. Despite the losses, Fiji Airways says safety standards remain high and no passengers or crew have been injured in recent incidents. However, officials agree the issue needs urgent attention to protect both passengers and aircraft.

Chennai, India: An Air India flight Airbus 320 operating from Colombo to Chennai was forced to undergo a post-landing inspection on Tuesday after a suspected bird strike during its approach. The Airbus aircraft, carrying 158 passengers, landed safely at Chennai International Airport with no reported injuries. The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo. Air India, in a statement, said that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
