The digital twin will support predictive maintenance and certification efforts, marking a significant step for India’s Urban Air Mobility sector, though regulatory and computational challenges remain. Chennai, India: The ePlane Company, a deep-tech aerospace startup incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Chennai, has announced a significant milestone in the development of its e200x electric air taxi: the creation of a high-fir-delity digital twin model built with technology from NVIDIA. The announcement was made on 19 February 2026 in an official statement published by the company. The digital twin, constructed using NVIDIA’s Omniverse simulation libraries, is a virtual representation of the ePlane eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft designed to replicate complex aerodynamic behaviours, sensor inputs and flight scenarios with high precision. Engineers can now simulate interactions that would be expensive, risky or time-consuming to test physically, such as extreme weather conditions and emergency manoeuvres. To power onboard computing and real-time decision-making, The ePlane Company will deploy NVIDIA’s IGX platform, aimed at integrating multiple sensors like cameras and radar with advanced data-fusion and visualisation capabilities. This system is expected to support autonomy algorithms and enhance situational awareness during flight operations. In a statement included in the press release, Prof. Satya Chakravarthy, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of The ePlane Company, said the collaboration “blurs the line between the digital and the physical” and allows the company to validate its flight-operations systems extensively through simulation before real-world testing. The digital twin also functions as a predictive analytics engine, mirroring real-world aircraft behaviour to forecast maintenance requirements. This capability could reduce operational downtime and improve reliability as the e200x moves toward regulatory certification. The initiative marks a noteworthy advance for India’s growing Urban Air Mobility (UAM) sector, which has seen increasing investment and interest from both government and private players. The ePlane Company holds India’s first Design Organisation Approval (DOA) for a privately developed electric aircraft and operates a 60,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Chennai. Despite the technological promise, regulatory frameworks for certifying eVTOL aircraft are still evolving in India and globally, which analysts identify as a key hurdle before large-scale deployment can begin. Moreover, building and validating high-accuracy digital twins requires significant computational resources, including high-performance GPUs and specialised engineering expertise. The Seattle-based manufacturer said it handed over 160 jets in the fourth quarter alone, with December deliveries accounting for a particularly strong finish. The company’s 2025 delivery tally included 447 Boeing 737 models, 88 787 Dreamliners, 35 777s and 30 767s, a diversified mix that reflects improvement across both narrowbody and widebody segments. Boeing’s 2025 performance represents a substantial year-on-year increase from 348 deliveries in 2024, a year severely constrained by labor disruptions, regulatory scrutiny and ongoing supply chain bottlenecks. The joint venture, Beijing Aero Engine Services Ltd (BAESL), will induct its first engine in December 2025, with full commercial operations scheduled for early 2026. The Beijing site will overhaul Trent 700, Trent XWB-84, and Trent 1000 engines, which power A330, A350 and Boeing 787 fleets operated by Chinese carriers. Rolls-Royce said BAESL is designed as a “digitally enabled, next-generation” shop with advanced tooling and automation. According to official Beijing investment authorities, the facility spans more than 80,000 sq. m and will employ up to 800 staff once fully ramped up. It is expected to reach an annual capacity of 250 engine shop visits by the mid-2030s. This is Rolls-Royce’s first MRO joint venture on mainland China and its fourth globally, complementing HAESL in Hong Kong, SAESL in Singapore, and N3 in Germany. For Air China, the project strengthens domestic overhaul capability for high-thrust wide-body engines, reducing dependency on overseas shops. Air China executives said the facility will support the “industrialisation and localisation” of China’s engine maintenance ecosystem. Rolls-Royce leaders noted that China’s expanding wide-body fleet with nearly 600 Trent engines in service requires long-term, locally available maintenance capacity. BAESL is situated in Shunyi District, inside the Beijing Capital International Airport Economic Zone. Infrastructure includes overhaul bays, advanced engine testing facilities, parts warehousing and digital monitoring centres. With the JV now structurally complete, Rolls-Royce and Air China will begin progressive operational readiness checks before the first Trent engine arrives later this year. The facility is expected to significantly cut turnaround times for Chinese operators and reinforce China’s position as a major MRO hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
